The Four Sections of the Hull of Submarine Humaitá Are Now at ICN, Coming from UFEM, Also Located in Itaguaí. The Welding Phase for Closing the Hull Begins Now
The construction works for the second conventional submarine of the PROSUB Program, the “Humaitá,” are in full swing. Today (06/19), ICN, Itaguaí Construções Navais, from Itaguaí (RJ), completed the transfer of sections 3 and 4.
The sections were built at the UFEM factory, also in Itaguaí, and were the last to be received at ICN. Now the shipyard will begin the final joining phase of the sections aiming to close the vessel’s hull.
As published by Click Petróleo e Gás, section 1 and section 2 were already transferred to the ICN shipyard on April 25 and May 29, respectively.
These last two transferred sections make up the bow section of the submarine, where important compartments for the submarine’s operation are located, such as the control room, masts, periscope, and the torpedo launch tubes.

The total weight of the four sections transferred to ICN is 440 tons, and the second conventional submarine (S-41) of the PROSUB program will be 72 meters long.
The vessel will have a displacement of about 2,000 tons, and its delivery is expected for the second semester of 2020.
The Brazilian Navy’s PROSUB Program provides for the construction of four submarines with conventional propulsion (Diesel-electric) and one nuclear-powered submarine, the first of its kind to be manufactured in Brazil.
The Humaitá is the second of the four and is expected to be ready by the end of 2022.
The first submarine of the program was launched on December 14 of last year and was named Riachuelo (S40), and its sea trial is scheduled for this year.
The sea trial for the Humaitá (S-41) is planned for 2020, the Tonelero (S42) in 2021, and the Angostura (S43) in 2022.
