The clip that jumped from a small Oregon zipline account to millions of feeds runs 67 seconds, and the save happens inside the first four of them, which is the part almost nobody is talking about
The footage opens on a platform in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, outside Klamath Falls, Oregon. A guide named Averie has both gloved hands wrapped around a rope. A woman is coming down the cable toward him, fast, on the third line of the tour.
He yells “Move your hand! Move your hand!” and hauls with his whole body. Text burned into the video spells out the problem for anyone who missed it, and the problem is that she has put her hand in front of her trolley.
The rope in his hands
That rope is not decoration. It runs to the brake block, the hardware parked on the cable that an arriving rider is supposed to hit. Hauling on the rope changes how hard the block hits back, and it is the only control he has left.

In his caption he says he softened the brake as she made contact, and that when he asked whether she was okay, she had no hurt fingers. He pulls, and the block gives. That is the whole save, and it lasts about three seconds.
A course sold on hand braking
Crater Lake Zipline is not coy about this. Its description of the Zipline Canopy Tour, a 1.5 mile route across nine ziplines, two rappels and two sky bridges, says the course is “designed with hand braking” so guests actively engage as they fly.
Hand braking means the glove is the speed control. A rider lays a gloved hand on the steel cable and squeezes, trading speed for friction and heat. It is the oldest arrangement in the business, and the one the industry has spent years arguing about.
Behind the trolley, never in front
There is exactly one correct place for that hand. It goes on the cable behind the pulley, in the rider’s own wake, where nothing is travelling toward it. The hand belongs behind the trolley, and guides repeat that instruction on every platform.

Put it in front and the geometry turns hostile. The hand now sits between a moving pulley and a fixed block, in the one gap the whole system is built to close. That gap crushes fingers, which is why his first word was an order, not a question.
The three ways a zipline stops
The gentlest brake is gravity. Build enough uphill run-out at the arrival end and the slope bleeds the speed off on its own, which is why short, slow lines frequently carry no braking hardware at all.
The second family is mechanical, and it is what this platform uses: a block on the cable, a spring or rope tether to absorb the hit, a person managing the force. The third is magnetic, an eddy-current brake needing no contact and no operator.
The 6 mph line the industry drew
In June 2022 the Association for Challenge Course Technology published an advisory on human-operated zipline brakes. It set the threshold that frames the whole debate at 6 mph, or 10 km/h. Below that arrival speed gravity does the work and no brake system is required.
Above it the language hardens. Participant interaction “must be backed up”, and its technical committee calls it prudent to design brakes that never depend on the rider. A later draft standard reported by Adventure Park Insider bars hand braking as a primary brake entirely.
Half a second, maybe two
The same advisory puts hard numbers on what the video captured. A brake attendant’s reaction time runs from half a second to two seconds, and it improves with experience, which is why the document says seasoned guides work these brakes better than new ones.
The geometry then punishes delay twice. Reaction distance scales directly with speed, so doubling the speed doubles it. Braking distance is worse, because doubling the speed quadruples it, with four times the energy to absorb in the same stretch of cable.
What ASTM F2959 demands before the first rider
The other book on the shelf is ASTM F2959, Standard Practice for Aerial Adventure Courses, first approved in 2012. Its section 3.2.5 defines a zipline as an inclined cable on which harnessed patrons hang from a trolley, propelled mainly by gravity.
The operational teeth sit in section 5.7.2. Before a course carries a single guest on a given day, the operator must run and document a pre-opening inspection, and item 5.7.2.2 requires verifying that the braking systems actually work.
The injury count nobody puts in the caption
Researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital counted every zipline injury that reached a US emergency room across 16 years. Their answer, published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine, was an estimated 16,850 between 1997 and 2012.
The curve is the uncomfortable part. Almost 70 percent of those injuries landed in the final four years, and 2012 alone produced more than 3,600, close to 10 a day. Falls caused 77 percent, collisions 13 percent, and 11 percent were admitted.
Why she ended up hanging over the slope
Softening a brake carries a price, and the video shows it. She never reached the deck. She came to rest out over the hillside, suspended from a cable strung between two trees, with the guide watching from a platform she could not get to.
A zipline cable sags, and the low point is rarely the platform. Any rider who sheds momentum early settles there and stays. It happens often enough that the same account has a clip of a guest stranded 700 feet out, with 3.4 million views.
The 30 seconds that made it travel
He clips onto the line and goes out after her hand over hand, talking the whole way. “Hold position, miss. Grab the cable.” As her voice tightens, the register changes: “You’re good, I’m gonna get you.”

Back on the deck he says only “let me get you where you’re comfortable”. Once she is standing he explains the cause in 20 seconds of plain mechanics, “We’re always braking in the back,” holding his gloved hands up to show her the difference.
The guide with 2,000 hours on the cable
Then he takes it off her shoulders. “I know it’s because you’re super scared,” he says, before the on-screen text closes with “so I’m not mad at you but be careful.” The staff page lists Averie as lead guide with more than 2,000 hours on zipline courses.
The business belongs to Darren and Jenifer Roe, guiding in southern Oregon since 1984, and their son is the one on the rope. The clip had 6.6 million views when this story was written, with 252,600 likes, because of what came after the danger rather than the save itself.
