INEA requested the Environmental Protection Area (APA) Council of Sana (Sanapa) for technical instructions and states that the hydroelectric plant may affect the other water intakes that currently ensure water supply for Macaé, Rio das Ostras, and Barra de São João, a district of Casimiro de Abreu, in addition to the existing industrial sector in the region.
In the manifesto to be sent to public agencies, it highlights, “All tourism in the region depends on a conserved river. The damage is serious for the current generation and for future generations. We do not need and do not want PCHs on the Macaé River. Let’s defend the river, its freedom, and health! The river is a collective heritage!”
According to the president of the CBH of the Macaé and Ostras Rivers, Rodolfo Coimbra, “This enterprise exclusively uses water as a resource to move the turbines. It involves a large volume of intake and storage, which could harm the water source. This project could be an aggravating factor for the water scarcity that the region already faces. The Committee hopes that this does not happen.”
On Monday, July 22, the State Environmental Institute (INEA) confirmed that it received an application for an environmental license for the enterprise.
“The state environmental agency will issue the technical instruction for the preparation of the Environmental Impact Study/Environmental Impact Report (EIA/RIMA),” stated INEA.
