Abespetro calculates 721 offshore jobs by 2022

Brazilian Association of Petroleum Services Companies (Abespetro) estimates that by 2022 the sector will open 721 jobs offshore

Surveys carried out by the Brazilian Association of Petroleum Services Companies (Abespetro) point to an optimistic estimate involving the generation of offshore jobs. The institute predicts that the sector will open 721 jobs in the offshore sector. There has been uncertainty in the oil and gas market in recent years, the drop in oil prices and cost-cutting measures attest to the desperation experienced by the sector. This has greatly affected offshore production, but now that the price of oil appears to have stabilized, the industry is faced with the following question: What are the prospects for offshore oil and gas in this new business environment?

Global overseas investment has suffered a sharp decline as a result of the oil price collapse, after hitting an all-time high in 2014 of $335 billion. In the new pricing climate, many planned investments have not turned out to be profitable, and companies have had to rethink how to reduce investment costs to make their projects marketable. However, industry sentiment turned in 2017 to a more optimistic view of the future. Rystad Energy believes that global overseas investments will be $155 billion as of 2018.

With the revitalization of mature fields and the freezing of oil prices, Abespetro concludes that the tendency is for growth in the offshore sector and the probability of employability exceeding 1,2 million new job openings. We can clearly see the dynamics of the industry between investment and production, where production follows the investment profile. Due to this evident relationship, we expect production to recover quickly again until 2022, as the estimated post-2018 increase in business will result in new assets and consequently the restructuring of the sector.
