Growing Threat: Brazil Witnesses Increase in Electric Accidents
The current landscape of electrical safety in Brazil is concerning. Technical failures, negligence of safety equipment, and lack of awareness put lives at risk daily. The recent 5% increase in electricity-related accidents in the first half of 2023 alarmed experts and highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures.
Causes and Consequences of Electric Accidents
Inadequacies such as makeshift repairs, lack of training, use of low-quality materials, and disregard for safety standards are some of the reasons for this significant increase. According to Abracopel, compared to the previous year, there was an increase in electric shocks, lightning incidents, and electrocution fires, totaling 992 occurrences. Tragically, 399 of these situations resulted in fatalities.
And the numbers don’t stop there. Of the recorded incidents, electric shocks accounted for more than half, with a total of 521 reports – a staggering average of three incidents per day. Of the reported incidents, 350 were fatal.

Looking Beyond Borders: The American Landscape
Brazil is not alone in its battle against electric accidents. The United States, one of the most technologically advanced nations, faces a similar number of electrical fatalities, with about 1,000 deaths annually. This country records an impressive 30,000 non-fatal electrocution incidents each year. Notably, 20% of these accidents involve children, and most accidents with adults occur in work environments.
Preventing and Ensuring Safety
Engerey, with its extensive experience in the electrical sector, emphasizes the need for preventive measures. Fábio Amaral, Electrical Engineer and CEO of Engerey, highlights the importance of one simple device: the Residual Current Device (RCD). This equipment detects abnormal energy leaks and automatically shuts off the electrical current, preventing electric shocks and protecting electronic equipment from overloads.
The installation of this device is a simple measure that can save lives; however, most Brazilian homes do not have the RCD. Procobre and Abracopel reveal that only 27% of households in the country are equipped with this vital device.
To reverse this situation, it is essential to take precautions such as:
- Avoid overloading outlets;
- Keep electronics away from wet areas;
- Supervise children near electrical sources;
- Be cautious when handling electrical showers;
- Avoid exposed wires;
- Hire qualified professionals for electrical work;
- And, of course, always turn off the main current when performing maintenance at home.
Awareness and prevention are our best weapons against the dangers of electricity.
