Moments of inspiration can arise at any moment. For Rani East-Jeffs, a 14-year-old from Australia, the inspiration came while waiting for her shower to warm up and watching water run down the drain.

Motivated by a school challenge to reduce water waste, Rani created the Aqua Loop, an innovative device that can transform the way we use this precious resource.

How Does The Aqua Loop Work?

The Aqua Loop is a system that monitors the water temperature and only releases it when it reaches the desired level.

Using circuit boards, pipes, a button, and solenoid valves, the device prevents liters of water from being wasted while waiting for the shower to heat up.

Instead of going straight down the drain, the water is redirected back to the heating system, allowing for its reuse.

It’s a device that stays on your roof and prevents water from being wasted, so it doesn’t even leave the shower and recirculates back to the hot water system“, Rani explained in an interview with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The Impact of The Invention

Rani’s calculations indicate that the Aqua Loop can save approximately 2,628 liters of water per year in a household with four people.

This not only reduces the water bill but also helps conserve this essential resource, especially in regions facing water scarcity.

Rani’s teacher, Lloyd Godson, praised the initiative and highlighted the simplicity of the design. “It wasn’t expected for students to produce a functional prototype, but Rani went above and beyond“, he stated to ABC. Although similar solutions exist in other countries, none are available in Australia, making the Aqua Loop a promising innovation for the local market.

Recognition and Future Outlook

The invention took Rani to a young inventors conference at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, where she caught the attention of Eman Soliman, founder of EduTech Australia.

With the organization’s support, she participated in the STEAMS-Preneurs Education Program and Competition, which encourages girls to develop skills in science, technology, and entrepreneurship.

The result? Rani became the state champion, securing support to refine and commercialize her product. “The invention has tremendous potential to impact global water savings, especially in drought-affected areas“, Soliman stated.
