Market Opens Up for New Job Professions in Agriculture for Drone Pilots, Production Engineers, Mechanics, Designers and Engineers for Agricultural Machinery, Data Analysts, and Much More!
The agribusiness sector recorded in 2020 the best performance in job generation since 2011, according to a technical statement from the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil that analyzed last year’s data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Novo Caged). According to a study by the CNA, the countryside opened about 61.6 thousand new job openings in 2020. And a survey conducted by the German Cooperation Agency, in partnership with SENAR/RS and UFRGS, states that, in the next two years, eight new careers in agribusiness are expected to generate 178.8 thousand job opportunities, but only 32.5 thousand people will be qualified to fill them, a gap of 82%.

In 10 years, this gap is expected to fall to 55%. Following this new trend, Geração Agro, a startup focused on training and workforce development, states that one of the new professions already in demand by grain-producing rural properties is planting supervisor.
Studies by CEPEA/USP indicate that a significant portion of these job vacancies is aimed at professionals with higher education or specialized training in certain areas, created by the adoption of new technologies from digital agriculture or the offering of agricultural machines and implements that require a certain agronomic knowledge.

Thus, software developers for productivity control, drone pilots for crop measurement systems, production engineers and mechanics, designers for agricultural machines, and data analysts generated by productivity maps are some of the job opportunities in agribusiness, both inside and outside the gate, that have been opened in recent years, resulting from this growing development and the implementation of new production methods in the field.
Continuous Search for Increased Productivity in Crops Creates Many Job Opportunities in Various Sectors
However, the search for increased productivity in crops is constant. Proof of this is that equipment, as well as new management software or enhancements for specific farming activities, are constantly emerging. Property map reading systems are there to confirm this. Because of this, new demands arise in the field that require new professionals, something that was not clear until recently.
According to the technical director of Geração Agro, agronomist Paulo Ferreira, one of the new opportunities with great potential for strong demand is the planting supervisor position. He states that this is a role whose scarcity is already being felt by many producers, but there are still no qualified professionals available in the market to perform these activities. Ferreira explains that a person needs to understand the planting processes – all the stages – and have agronomic fundamentals to make the right decisions at the right time.
“They need to be methodical, have a sense of urgency and, above all, importance. Someone capable of taking responsibility for the success of planting, generating significant gains at that moment, which will reflect in the harvest. Their main functions are planning the planting and continuously and closely monitoring the operation, making necessary adjustments to ensure the expected result: an excellent planting,” says the executive from Geração Agro.
Geração Agro Creates Training Course for This Activity Called Valuing Each Plant
Ferreira also emphasizes that this professional needs to undergo training or a preparatory course for the role to learn about all the activities they will be responsible for on the farm. “They will have, for example, the mission of leading the planting team, exercising full and natural leadership over the farm’s employees who make up the base of the pyramid, the mechanics and operators,” says Ferreira. He adds that it is also the responsibility of the Plant Supervisor to plan and ensure that mechanics prepare the planter well before the planting day. “They become a support point for the operators and mechanics, enabling targeted training for these groups to be more effective due to their supervision,” highlights the agronomist.
Seeing this opportunity, Geração Agro created a training course for this activity called Valuing Each Plant. According to Ferreira, participants will learn about team management, aspects of planter certification, preventive adjustment actions, and fine-tuning for each plot of the equipment and overall planting analysis. “It is clear that all stages are essential for planting. A small oversight in any of them can lead to lost productivity,” concludes the executive.
