Alagoas Ambiental Developed The First Power Plant That Works From Methane Gas Generated From Waste  

The first power plant powered by methane gas generated from waste, by Alagoas Ambiental, was inaugurated this Thursday (17) in the metropolitan area of Maceió, precisely in the municipality of Pilar. In its initial phase, the facility will be capable of producing 1 MWh, to supply up to 4,000 homes. Methane is primarily used as an energy source. The gas produced (biogas) in landfills or dumps is drained through a pipe and then sent to a plant that converts it into energy. In São Paulo, 700,000 people benefit from the energy derived from biogas extracted from urban waste.

Power Plant Powered By Waste Methane Gas May Expand To 4 Megawatts  

According to the administrator of Alagoas Ambiental, Tarcísio Neto, the company is pleased to inaugurate the plant that will have the capacity to generate electricity through methane gas from waste, which is extremely explosive and dangerous.

The plant will transform the gas into electricity using technology from Italy. Neto states that the company is happy to be one of the pioneers of this venture in Alagoas, being a great way to contribute to the environment.

According to the administrator, the power plant will be equipped with four engines in its final design, generating a capacity to produce 4 megawatts of energy per hour, and he states that the project will be essential for Alagoas.

The company is already a pioneer in leachate treatment through osmosis, a procedure used to turn leachate into water. In addition, it also has a civil construction plant responsible for producing raw materials for road construction.

According to Tarcísio, from now on the methane gas will be channeled and taken to a machine that will convert it into energy. The administrator emphasized that there are other cities in the northeastern region that also use the same technology, such as Petrolina and Caruaru, located in Pernambuco.

Renato Filho, the mayor of the municipality, received the technology that transforms methane gas from waste into energy and spoke about the importance of the city for the development of Alagoas. Filho asserts that the inauguration of the power plant is an essential step, considering that renewable energy.

During the inauguration of the unit, the mayor mentioned plans to inaugurate a solar power plant in the municipality and also the first cable car in Alagoas. The mayor estimates that Pilar will be responsible for 10% of the production of methane gas in all of Brazil by the end of 2022. The municipality has been at the forefront of the advancement of Alagoas, and Filho states that it is necessary for the city to be 100% supplied with locally produced piped gas, as Alagoas should optimize all its resources, and the municipality is a partner in these investments.  

New Jobs Will Be Created After The Inauguration Of The Power Plant In AL

Marcelo Vieira, president of the Regional Labor Court, highlighted the jobs generated by the initiative and said that this is one of the reasons why Alagoas supports this and any other venture involving solid waste treatment.  

According to judge Tutmés Airan, of the Court of Justice of Alagoas, it is the ideal time to celebrate a new achievement, as it will be possible to extract from nature only what we need, with transformative capacity, and still generate new jobs.
