Expedition Reveals Boxes With Emeralds, Rubies and Sapphires in Remote Region of Mont Blanc; Gems Had Been Missing Since 1966
A group of climbers accidentally found a treasure valued at over R$ 2 million during a climb on Mont Blanc, between France and Italy. The news, published in June 2025 by MSN Brazil, quickly gained international attention. Moreover, the case drew attention for involving precious stones lost for almost six decades.
During the ascent, the climbers sighted a metallic box partially buried in the ice. Shortly thereafter, they opened the container and found hundreds of precious stones, such as emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. Therefore, it is suspected that the contents belong to a shipment lost in an airplane accident.
Airplane Accident in 1966 Explains Origin of the Treasure
According to historical records, the contents of the box are directly linked to Air India Flight 101, which collided with Mont Blanc on January 24, 1966, while flying from Bombay to New York. As a result of the tragedy, the 117 passengers died on impact.

Climbers Hand Over the Treasure to French Authorities
Right after the find, the climbers decided to voluntarily hand over the contents to local authorities. Consequently, the French government initiated legal proceedings, in accordance with national treasure laws.
Under this law, abandoned objects must remain in the custody of the State for two years, allowing potential heirs to claim ownership. If no one comes forward, the State will split the proceeds: 50% to the climbers and the remainder to the government.
Additionally, the French Ministry of the Interior called in forensic experts and gemologists to assess the authenticity of the gems and confirm the origin of the shipment.
Glacier Melting Reveals New Treasures in the Alps
In recent years, global warming has accelerated the melting of glaciers. As a consequence, historical objects that had been buried for decades are surfacing. Between 2010 and 2024, climbers have found newspapers, clothing, and pieces of aircraft.
Moreover, scholars emphasize that the phenomenon, while concerning, has revealed important aspects of modern history. However, it is essential that future discoveries occur with technical rigor and government authorization. Otherwise, historical heritage may be lost.
Treasure Reignites Debates on Legal and Ethical Destinies
Beyond legal aspects, the discovery has reignited an ethical debate. While some argue that the climbers should receive the full amount, others contend that the stones should be repatriated to India, their likely country of origin.
As explained by the Ministry of Justice, French legislation will be applied in full. So far, no one has come forward as the legitimate heir to the contents. Therefore, the division according to the law remains the most likely scenario.
For this reason, the issue continues to generate international repercussions. In fact, the Indian press is closely following the case.
Discovery Generates Tourist Impact and Environmental Concerns
With the announcement of the discovery, tourism experts are already expecting a significant increase in the number of visitors to Mont Blanc. Thus, local authorities are studying control measures to prevent over-exploitation of the area.
Even though the region attracts new adventurers, environmentalists warn of the risks. If there is an excess of open trails, the mountain’s ecosystem may suffer irreversible damage. Additionally, waste from unwary visitors can pollute sensitive glacial areas.
Meanwhile, the climbers who found the treasure have chosen to remain anonymous. According to the BFMTV channel, they did not want to identify themselves publicly for fear of harassment.
