The Beverage Giant Will Start Importing Its Wines from Argentina. Deliveries in Brazil Will Be Made by the Zé Delivery App, Also Owned by Ambev

If the title of the world’s largest brewery wasn’t enough, with a portfolio of over 70 labels, along with dozens of other beverages, Ambev has decided to expand even further with another alcoholic beverage that saw growth in sales last year, wine. Starting in July, the beverage giant will bring in a batch of 311,000 bottles of Argentine Dante Robino, which will be available for sale on the Zé Delivery platform, the app owned by Ambev, which delivers beverages in over 200 cities in Brazil.

Three types of wines will be available: a white made from chardonnay grapes, and two reds, a malbec and a cabernet sauvignon. Additionally, two sparkling wines will be offered, one brut and another demi-sec (sweet).

Wine consumption began to rise in Brazil at the start of the pandemic and continues to rise, according to Ideal Consulting. Between January and April 2021, there was a 5% increase in the total sales of Brazilian wineries combined with the importation of wines compared to the same period in 2020. There are 105.3 million liters of the beverage in this four-month period. Last year, from January to April, there were 100.2 million liters. The increase is led by imports, which saw a 35.9% rise in the first four months of 2021.

According to Rodrigo Lanari, Brazilian representative of the English consultancy Wine Intelligence/IWSR, “Wine was the big beneficiary of this pandemic, and the major beverage players are studying ways to enter this market.”

The importation of wines is restricted to Zé Delivery, according to Ambev. As reported by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo, since 2005, the wines and sparkling wines of Dante Robino have been imported and marketed by Grand Cru, which has exclusivity for selling the labels in the Brazilian market, and was not informed about Ambev’s operation.

The beverage giant – owner of brands like Skol, Antarctica, and Brahma – has also been testing new distribution models beyond traditional retail. Among its projects are the Zé Delivery itself (which serves customers a range of beverages), Sempre em Casa (a subscription service for special beers), and a kiosk operation in the form of containers, typically present at gas stations (Pit Stop Skol).

Ambev’s Wines Are Already Successful in Brazil

The wines and sparkling wines of Dante Robino from Ambev are already well received by Brazilian consumers. They have been imported since 2005 by Grand Cru, which markets them through its sales channels. The brand ranks as the fifth Argentine winery in Grand Cru’s ranking, which brings many wines from the tango country here, such as Viña Cobos, Familia Zuccardi, Escorihuela Gascon, and Pulenta.

Ambev purchased the Argentine winery in 2020, marking the start of the brewery’s activities with wines in South America. The transaction for Dante Robino was carried out by Quilmes, the group’s subsidiary in Argentina, and at the time, the value of the transaction was not disclosed.

The winery has 400 hectares of vineyards in the regions of Lujan de Cuyo, Barrancas, and Santa Rosa, all in Mendoza. In addition to bottled wines, Dante Robino has launched the canned wine Blasfemia, with sales currently restricted to the Argentine market.

This is the second major investment in wines by the group. In June 2019, ZX Ventures, the AB Inbev group’s global innovation division, purchased Babe Wine, a company that sells canned wines and is based in New York. The brand is a sales success in the North American market.

Ambev has been exploring the wine market in Brazil for some time. In 2016, brewery executives analyzed the peculiar wine importation market in Brazil. “Ambev even imported some labels from Europe to understand the operation,” says a consultant who followed the operation at the time. However, that plan did not move forward.
