Multinationals Toyota, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, and Fiat Treat the Situation as a Suspension, Not a Definitive End to Production in Brazil
After Ford’s exit from Brazil, the global supply crisis and the pandemic caused numerous automobile factories, such as Chevrolet, Honda, Audi (Volkswagen), Scania, Volvo, and Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Nissan, and Fiat to suspend vehicle production. This situation has also reached Toyota, and the country’s automotive industry may face collapse.

According to information from Toyota Brazil, the company will have to implement a new suspension, now at the factory in Indaiatuba (SP), starting on 13/10. According to the brand, production will remain halted until 23/10. It is worth noting that the Japanese factory in the interior of SP is responsible for the production of Corolla sedan vehicles.

According to the official announcement, Toyota stated: “Despite all the efforts we have made over time to manage the shortage of supplies affecting the global supply chain caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, a new shutdown is inevitable.”

Thus, the vehicle manufacturer will give collective vacation to factory workers in SP during the suspension. The return to activities is currently scheduled for 25/10.
Toyota says that the other factories located in the state of São Paulo will continue to operate. They are: São Bernardo do Campo, Porto Feliz, and Sorocaba.
The Automaker Treats the Incident as a Suspension, Not a Definitive End to Production in Brazil
Like other automakers in Brazil, this is not the first time in a short period that Toyota decides on a temporary shutdown due to a lack of supplies, such as semiconductors. For example, on 11/08 of this year, the brand temporarily halted production at its Sorocaba (SP) factory for 10 days.
On the same occasion, Toyota’s factory in Porto Feliz (SP) was partially shut down, according to the automaker’s press office.
On the other hand, as previously mentioned, unlike the suspension announced in Indaiatuba, the Toyota units in Brazil in São Bernardo do Campo, Porto Feliz, and Sorocaba will continue their normal activities.
After Ford Ka and Hyundai HB20, Duster Receives Zero Rating in Impact Test and Multinational Renault Faces Million-Dollar Fines
Multinational Renault Nissan is under scrutiny from Procon-SP after the Renault Duster was rated zero in an impact test conducted by Latin NCAP, where the vehicle rolled over and leaked fuel during the frontal crash. The result was announced last Friday (27) by the independent road safety institute for markets in Latin America and the Caribbean, which last year also rated the Ford Ka and Hyundai HB20 with zero scores.
Following the disastrous result, the consumer protection agency linked to the Government of São Paulo is demanding explanations from Renault regarding the poor performance of the Duster, which in the evaluation conducted by the Latin NCAP, the entry-level Duster vehicle from the French multinational, equipped with the two mandatory front airbags and electronic stability control, received a zero rating, rolled over, and leaked fuel in a frontal collision against a fixed barrier at 64 km/h.
And it didn’t stop there; the Duster’s door opened during the side impact, posing “serious ejection risk for the passenger,” while the SUV’s structure was deemed “unstable”—all according to the institute. When announcing the result, Latin NCAP recommended that Renault conduct a recall of the model. Last Friday, the company emphasized that the SUV “complies rigorously with the regulations” for the Brazilian market.
It is noteworthy that the zero rating applied to the Duster was based on stricter criteria adopted by Latin NCAP starting in 2020—the same criteria that also resulted in the zero ratings for Ford Ka and Hyundai HB20 last year after both received better assessments under the previous protocol.
