Environmental Projects in Espírito Santo That Will Receive Investments from ArcelorMittal
Among the planned improvements by ArcelorMittal Tubarão are the new Dust Removal Systems in the Coke Crushing and Steelmaking areas, expansion of the Capture Systems of the Blast Furnaces, renovation of Coke Batteries 2 and 3, and replacement of some equipment with newer, more efficient technologies. Also noteworthy is the ongoing renovation of Coke Batteries 2 and 3, which, in addition to generating about 600 jobs, utilizes a methodology called Rolling Repair, which consists of reconstructing the furnaces while the batteries are fully operational.
ArcelorMittal will make two significant deliveries in the area of environmental management in the next semester. In September, the works for the bag filter system at the Co-Products yard, valued at R$ 51 million, and the seawater desalination project, valued at R$ 50 million, will be completed. The latter will position the State of Espírito Santo at the forefront of water management in the country. This is the largest plant in the country, with an initial capacity to treat 500 m³ of water per hour (12,000 m³/day), which can be expanded in the future.

ArcelorMittal will resume operations at the steel mill in the Barra Mansa (RJ) unit in the second half of this year. The project will still require investments of around R$ 19 million for the maintenance and renovation of equipment necessary for the start of production. The resumption of activities at the steel mill, which has been halted since 2019, is motivated by the increase in market demand for steel and the economic growth prospects for the country. With the reactivation of the area, the estimate is that around 100 new direct jobs and 50 indirect jobs will be created.
According to the world’s largest steel producer, present in over 60 countries, the focus of investments at the Barra Mansa unit is mainly to meet the growing demand of the domestic steel market. The investments will be allocated to operational safety and technology projects for the equipment, with funds to restore the entire capture and filtration system of the steel mill and ensure better environmental compliance.
