Argentina Announces New Direct Car Import Measure for Individuals
The government of Argentina has announced a new measure that allows for the direct import of new cars by individuals. With this initiative, consumers will be able to purchase vehicles directly, without the need for intermediaries, ensuring access to the same tax benefits offered to major business entities in the automotive sector in the country, such as the Cidoa (Chamber of Automobile Importers and Related Businesses) and Adefa (Association of Automobile Manufacturers of Argentina).
This change could significantly impact the automobile market in the country, making prices more competitive and expanding access to electrified vehicles.
Objective of Direct Import of New Cars by Individuals
The main objective of the measure is to reduce the prices of new vehicles, an issue that the government had already been discussing with automakers. In February, some reductions occurred due to lower internal taxes; however, not all brands passed these benefits on to consumers.
-
With a price almost R$ 100 thousand lower, the Haval H9 surpasses the SW4 for the first time in March, but Toyota still leads in the accumulated total for 2026; the Chinese SUV bets on technology and premium finishing to compete at the top.
-
6 used cars that cost less than a new Honda CG 160 Titan and still provide trunk space, four seats, and comfort that many new motorcycles cannot offer.
-
Caoa Chery Tiggo 5X skyrockets in sales in Brazil: a 2,318% increase and waiting lists of up to 4 months to acquire the model.
-
Goodbye falls: Singaporean company Omoway begins production of a motorcycle that doesn’t fall and surprises the market by offering automatic balance technology that reduces accidents and transforms the urban riding experience.
Now, the initiative will focus on more affordable vehicles, allowing individuals to directly import models without intermediaries, which can prevent the absorption of tax benefits by distributors and resellers.
Legal Basis and Rules for Direct Vehicle Importation in Argentina
The regulation of this new policy is defined in theDecree 49/2025, published onJanuary 31, 2025. The decree establishes anannual quota of 50,000 electrified vehicles that may be imported without the 35% import tax.
The initial validity of the measure will be five years, totaling 250,000 imported units over that period. However, the rules will follow the guidelines of Mercosur and could only be altered if Argentina leaves the economic bloc.
Which Vehicles Are Eligible for Direct Import in Argentina?
Initially, the quota of 50,000 vehicles will be fully allocated to companies of Adefa and Cidoa. However, a modification in the final text of the regulation reserved part of this total for direct imports by consumers. According to government sources, this change will serve as a test to gauge demand, and if there is significant interest, the volume may be increased in the future.
Vehicles eligible for this benefit must be electrified, meaning only combustion-powered models will not be accepted. The following are eligible for import:
✅ Electric Cars
✅ Hybrid Models
✅ Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles
Additionally, cars must meet minimum requirements, such as:
- Weight over 400 kg (without batteries)
- Minimum power of 20 hp
- Range of at least 80 km
- Compliance with current safety standards (ABS brakes, front airbags, Isofix anchorage for child seats, and ESP stability control)
Maximum Price of Imported Cars
To comply with the new rule, imported vehicles must have a FOB value (price without taxes and prior to import) less than US$ 16,000 (approximately R$ 93,000).
Although they are exempt from the 35% import tax, the models will still be subject to other local taxes.
How to Participate in the Direct Import Program?
Consumers wishing to import a vehicle through this new program will need to register on an official online platform. According to the Argentine government, the initial process may be bureaucratic, but adjustments will be made as necessary.
Additional details about the bureaucratic steps and specific requirements will be disclosed in the coming days in an official bulletin.
Impacts of Direct Import of Electrified Cars
The Argentine government believes that this measure could modernize the national fleet, stimulate the adoption of more sustainable technologies and offer consumers more purchasing options. In addition, direct competition may pressure automakers to lower prices and expand the supply of electrified vehicles in the country.
With the possibility of increasing the quota and adjusting regulations, the direct import of new cars may become a milestone in the transformation of the Argentine automotive sector.
