Companies aim to provide the full range of processes and components needed for large-scale manufacturing of battery cells and systems. The demand across the industry is enormous: just in Europe, various companies plan to build cell factories with a total annual capacity of about 700 gigawatt-hours by 2030.
For both partners, this alliance is another step toward playing leadership roles in the world of electronic mobility. The partnership will build on complementary areas of expertise: while Volkswagen is a large-scale automaker on its way to becoming a major battery cell manufacturer, Bosch has excellent know-how in factory automation and systems integration.

Europe Has A Unique Opportunity To Become A Global Battery Powerhouse In The Coming Years
Thomas Schmall commented: “Europe has a unique opportunity to become a global battery powerhouse in the coming years. There is strong and growing demand for all aspects of battery production, including the equipment for new gigafactories. Volkswagen and Bosch will explore opportunities to develop and shape this new multi-billion-dollar industry in Europe. Our decision to become actively involved in the vertical integration of the battery manufacturing value chain will explore new pools of considerable profits. Establishing the creation of a fully localized European supply chain for electronic mobility manufactured in Europe certainly marks a rare opportunity in business history.”
Rolf Najork stated: “Together with Volkswagen, we are seeking a way to industrialize the production processes of battery cells with standardized equipment. We have the best prerequisites for this: Bosch is not only the largest automotive supplier in the world but also one of the leading providers of factory equipment. We understand how battery technology works and know how to manufacture it. With more than 135 years of automotive experience and our proven expertise in industrialization, we want to meet the growing demand for batteries. The European industry has the potential to become a technological driver for the ecological transformation of the economy.”
Volkswagen and Bosch have formed the project unit with the aim of preparing for the establishment of the new company by the end of 2022.
Volkswagen Is Also Joining The Growing Trend Of Automakers Finding Ways To Diversify Revenue
Volkswagen is also joining the growing trend of automakers finding ways to diversify revenue by offering services to competitors. On Tuesday, Ford and ADT formed a JV to provide a vehicle monitoring system that can be connected to any brand or model of car to help prevent thefts.
“Our decision to actively engage in the vertical integration of the battery manufacturing value chain will explore new pools of considerable profits,” added Schmall. “Defining a fully localized European supply chain for electronic mobility made in Europe certainly marks a rare opportunity in business history.”
The planned Volkswagen factory in Salzgitter is expected to produce 40 GWh, but if the automaker can ramp up production and build a total of six factories, it should have a combined production of 240 GWh.
Competitor Tesla Is Planning To Build A Battery Factory In Berlin With A Capacity Of 50 GWh
Tesla is planning to build a battery factory in Berlin with a capacity of 50 GWh alongside its 300-hectare site to build Model Y vehicles, but the factory is still awaiting regional authority approvals to start production, despite previous promises from CEO Elon Musk that production would start in November or December of last year.
The European Battery Alliance stated that a third of global batteries need to be produced in Europe by the end of the decade to reduce dependence on market leaders in South Korea and China, but so far battery cell plants capable of generating less than 900 gigawatt-hours of capacity in Europe are expected to account for only 16% of global production by 2029.
