The proposed route starts in London and crosses Central Europe to Germany, continuing into Russia and extending to Asia. This canal is an engineering feat that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Isthmus of Panama in Central America. The construction of the canal was a massive and challenging undertaking, facing both technical and public health challenges, such as the eradication of yellow fever and malaria in the area. The canal uses a system of locks to raise and lower ships, allowing them to cross Gatun Lake and the mountainous terrain of the isthmus.
In 2016, the Panama Canal was expanded with the addition of new, larger locks, allowing much larger cargo ships, known as “neopanamax,” to pass through. This expansion was another major engineering achievement and had a significant impact on global maritime trade, reinforcing the canal’s position as one of the world’s most important and strategic shipping routes.
