CATL is a Chinese company and a global leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries. After numerous announcements regarding the Qilin batteries, the manufacturer announced the start of their production. This is a new type of battery that promises to revolutionize the automotive market while offering a surprising range that exceeds 1,000 kilometers.
The new battery is capable of utilizing 72% of its body to store energy, a figure that significantly surpasses the capacity of current CTP (cell to pack) batteries. The Qilin batteries can thus achieve an energy density of 255 Wh/kg, which enables the substantial improvement noticeable in their range.

The Qilin batteries can store 13% more energy compared to the 4680 battery cells used by Tesla and manufactured by Panasonic, which share the same chemical system and size. Therefore, in addition to the surprising range, there is a reduction in charging time, while enhancing stability and safety, lifespan, and efficiency in all temperatures, even in the coldest ones.

Qilin Batteries Will Debut In The Zeekr 009 And Be Utilized By Brands Like Honda And Mercedes-Benz
The new batteries from CATL will debut in the Zeekr 009, a large minivan from the Chinese manufacturer Geely. The model was introduced in June 2022 and already has many orders for the version with the Qilin battery. However, the car will use a 140 kWh battery that, due to its high weight, will have “only” 822 kilometers of range.
In addition to the confirmed debut with Geely’s minivan, CATL has already made agreements to supply Qilin batteries to automotive giants like Honda and Mercedes-Benz. Thus, it is clear that other brands in the sector will also want to adopt this innovation soon.
It is important to note that the Chinese manufacturer plays an extremely significant role in the battery sector, not only in its country but globally. In 2022, the company was the largest holder of market share in the niche for the sixth consecutive year, with a share nearly 25% larger than the second-place holder, LG Energy Solution.
