Multinationals Bosch, Nissan, and Volkswagen Believe in the Electrification of Cars Using Ethanol-Based Fuel Cells
Large multinationals Bosch, Nissan, and Volkswagen believe in the electrification of cars using ethanol. The Alcohol Industry Union of Paraíba State (Sindalcool-PB) participated in a virtual meeting last Wednesday (02/06) to deepen discussions between ethanol producers and the automobile industry.

The meeting was attended by the president of Bosch Latin America, Besaliel Botelho, and the advisor of the Brazilian Association of Automotive Engineering and Bright Consulting, Ricardo Simões Abreu, along with representatives from all ethanol-producing states in Brazil and industry leaders such as the president of the Sugarcane Industry Union (UNICA), Evandro Gussi, and the president of the National Sugar-Energy Forum, André Rocha.
Ethanol producers expressed optimism regarding the new turn that the biofuel could take in the coming years. “The hydrogen fuel cell is a long-term partnership we want to build with Bosch, which today is a company that generates seven billion in Latin America. It is certainly a brand that makes a significant contribution to the world. We hope that the ethanol-powered fuel cell technology developed here reaches countries like India, which has 9 of the 10 most polluted cities in the world,” said the president of Sindalcool-PB, Edmundo Barbosa, who hosted the event and led the discussions.

The ethanol industry has 40 years of experience in Brazil and provides supply across the entire Brazilian territory. In 2019, ethanol consumption reached 46% of the national fleet. The biofuel avoids about 90% of greenhouse gas emissions and is used to reduce emissions in various parts of the world.
Bosch, Nissan, and Volkswagen Believe in the Electrification of Cars Using Ethanol
The multinational giant Bosch is a company that believes in the electrification of cars using ethanol. This will be possible thanks to the development of ethanol-based fuel cells, which are also being developed by Nissan and Volkswagen. With this technology, a chemical reaction happening inside the vehicle’s engine extracts hydrogen from ethanol and generates electricity, capable of driving it with autonomy and without generating polluting emissions.
“This is a great opportunity for Brazil and the ethanol industry to generate energy through hydrogen cells, for both stationary applications and urban mobility. By 2050, we know that we will have mobility free of carbon dioxide (CO2), and Brazil made the right decision in promoting ethanol, as it is a biofuel that also boosts the local economy and creates jobs for the country,” said the president of Bosch Latin America, Besaliel Botelho.
According to the president of Sindalcool-PB, the event achieved its objectives. “The meeting succeeded in initiating an even more positive agenda. We valued the development of Flex technology by the automotive industry in this meeting and recorded the economic growth generated by this technology. Brazil produced just over 200 million tons of sugarcane in 2003, and today the amount exceeds 600 million. Now, over 32 billion liters of ethanol are produced. Many cities have grown due to the development that ethanol and sugar production brought with Flex vehicles. Pollution has been reduced in major cities, and many deaths have been avoided due to ethanol use. The country has had lower petroleum derivative imports, greater tax collection, and the number of jobs has doubled,” said Edmundo.
According to the executive, a new “leap of prosperity” is on the horizon. “Today, we stand before a new leap in prosperity with ethanol. Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is contained in ethanol, which is energy-intensive and can be produced advantageously from sugarcane and corn biomass, making it renewable. The hydrogen from ethanol is safe and has zero emissions. Brazil is the only country with a national ethanol supply network. These factors are crucial for the electrification of cars and trucks without the burdens of batteries that cost five times more to recycle and still use dirty energy,” emphasized Barbosa.
