Infrastructure in Minas Gerais Gains New Momentum with Works on BR-381, Changes in State-Owned Companies and Debates on Metropolitan Transport.

The Infrastructure in Minas Gerais entered the public agenda on Wednesday (14), with announcements that directly impact mobility, state management, and the daily lives of millions of Minas Gerais residents.

The what involves three strategic fronts: the Duplication of BR-381, the reformulation of the management of State-Owned Companies in Minas Gerais, and the possible creation of a new model for the Metropolitan Transport of Greater BH.

The who includes the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, the Romeu Zema Government, and municipalities in the Metropolitan Region.

The when starts as early as March, with effects throughout 2026.

The where involves Belo Horizonte, the metropolitan surroundings, and strategic logistical corridors.

The how involves works, decrees, and technical arrangements.

The why is linked to the need to modernize infrastructure, reduce historical bottlenecks, and make the public system more efficient.

Right from the start, the federal government confirmed the beginning of one of the most awaited works in the state, while the Minas Gerais Executive advances in administrative changes and municipalities press for structural solutions in public transportation.

Duplication of BR-381 Begins in March and Targets Critical Stretch

The Duplication of BR-381, one of the most dangerous and congested highways in Minas Gerais, will begin in March of this year.

The confirmation came from Minister Renan Filho, during an official commitment in Belo Horizonte.

According to the minister, initial interventions will occur in the stretch between Ravena and Caeté, considered one of the most critical points of the road.

The segment closest to the capital of Minas Gerais, however, still depends on the conclusion of legal proceedings related to the expropriation of families living along the highway.

The works had previously been announced for 2025 but were postponed.

Now, the federal government’s expectation is that the schedule will be maintained, reducing accidents, improving production flow, and strengthening the Infrastructure in Minas Gerais

State-Owned Companies in Minas Gerais Enter the Center of Political Dispute

Meanwhile, at the state level, the State-Owned Companies in Minas Gerais have become the target of intense political debate after the publication of a new decree by the state Executive.

The measure alters how the state classifies, monitors, and controls its public companies.

Companies that receive state resources to cover personnel expenses, maintenance, or investments may now fall into this category.

As a result, these companies are subject to more stringent limits on hiring, salary adjustments, and the granting of benefits.

The text also provides for, in extreme cases, the possibility of extinction or merger of state-owned companies deemed unviable.

The opposition in the Legislative Assembly reacted and is already articulating measures to block the effects of the decree, arguing that the initiative could weaken essential public services.

The Romeu Zema Government, on the other hand, argues that the change is necessary to ensure fiscal balance and greater administrative efficiency.

Metropolitan Transport of Greater BH May Have Unified Management

Another central axis of Infrastructure in Minas Gerais involves the Metropolitan Transport of Greater BH, which may undergo a profound reformulation.

Four municipalities in the Metropolitan Region — Belo Horizonte, Contagem, Betim, and Nova Lima — are discussing the creation of a unified management model for the system.

The municipalities believe that the current format does not meet the needs of the population, presents operational flaws, and generates high costs without a proportional return in quality.

The proposal under study is being developed by a technical body with representatives from the involved cities.

If it advances, the new model could redefine contracts, routes, subsidies, and the governance of the system, directly impacting millions of users who depend on public transport daily.

Infrastructure in Minas Gerais as a Strategic Axis

Together, the Duplication of BR-381, the changes in State-Owned Companies in Minas Gerais, and the redesign of Metropolitan Transport of Greater BH reveal a broad strategy for reorganizing Infrastructure in Minas Gerais

Although each initiative has its own challenges — legal, political, or technical — all point to an effort to modernize and rationalize the use of public resources.

The success of these actions will depend on meeting deadlines, institutional dialogue, and execution capacity.

Thus, 2026 is shaping up to be a decisive year for defining the paths of Minas Geral’s infrastructure and its impacts on the economic and social development of the state.
