Navy Inaugurates Structures at the Naval Complex of Itajaí and Advances with Submarine Project. Discover the New Navy Facilities to Be Inaugurated in 2025.
On Thursday (13), the Brazilian Navy inaugurated its new facilities at the Naval Complex of Itaguaí (RJ) as part of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub). The new facilities of the Brazilian Navy include the administrative building of the Submarine Base of Ilha da Madeira (BSIM), the electrical substation, docks 3 and 4, the BSIM Square, and the Ceremony Portico.
New Navy Facilities at the Naval Complex Expand Operational Capacity
According to information from the Navy, the facilities will allow for the expansion of the operational capacity of the Naval Complex, which can now accommodate 2 submarines moored alongside or one ship. According to Admiral Claudio Henrique Mello de Almeida, Commander of Naval Operations, the deliveries align with the strategic planning of the Naval Force, which includes not only the acquisition of new assets but also the ability to control and maintain them from land.
Claudio also highlights that deliveries at the new facilities of the Brazilian Navy are underway. In addition to the infrastructure, the Navy already has 2 incorporated submarines, which are being used in fleet operations. Another 2 conventional submarines are about to arrive, along with the main goal of the program, which is the Conventionally Armed Nuclear Submarine.

For Admiral Alexandre Rabello de Faria, General Director of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Navy, these new facilities of the Brazilian Navy reaffirm the Force’s commitment to upgrading its facilities, strengthening the Prosub, considered the largest strategic program of the Brazilian state.
Understand the Function of the New Facilities of the Brazilian Navy
The new administrative building of the Naval Complex, where around 200 military personnel from various areas will operate, centralizes the operational management of the BSIM, improving working conditions and optimizing support for naval activities. The docks 3 and 4 expand the logistical and mooring capacity of the Base.
The integrated electrical substation will ensure power supply and battery recharging, enhancing autonomy and efficiency of activities. The structure also includes the BSIM Square and the Ceremony Portico, spaces dedicated to graduations and military ceremonies.
The new facilities of the Brazilian Navy have also received new monitoring, security, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as a photovoltaic solar plant, contributing to energy efficiency and reducing operational costs.
The expansion of the Naval Complex allows for better conditions of service to military companies receiving support from the BSIM, expanding its operational capacity. With the delivery of the new dock, the base will be able to accommodate two submarines moored alongside or one ship, providing greater flexibility and logistical efficiency, as mentioned earlier.
Discover the Submarine Base of Ilha da Madeira (BSIM)
Inaugurated in 2020, the Submarine Base of Ilha da Madeira (BSIM), located at the Naval Complex of Itaguaí (CNI), is used for the Prosub, which aims to produce four conventional submarines and the first Brazilian submarine with nuclear propulsion.
The BSIM operates with the objective of contributing to naval missions, especially those of submarines, in addition to providing logistical support to the supported Military Organizations (OM). The base will offer security for areas and facilities of the Naval Complex of Itaguaí, including maritime, land, and common areas perimeters, in coordination with other OM and companies based in the Complex, as well as provide basic health support.
