Air Products Has The Largest Green Hydrogen Project In The World: The NEOM Project, Which Will Contribute To Global Decarbonization Goals
Decarbonization has become a global goal, and currently, the world is experiencing a moment of alignment of strategies towards this common objective. Carbon neutrality is on the agenda, once the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) in global warming has been recognized. Reducing CO2 emissions in the atmosphere as soon as possible has become a global mission, which involves changing the energy matrix in the energy, industrial, and mobility sectors.

The transition is already underway. Many industries are committing to new processes to operate in a clean and sustainable manner. The same is true in the transportation sector. Electric cars or those powered by green hydrogen are no longer a projection for a distant future. Several countries already offer adapted vehicles for these alternative energy matrices, and the advancement of these technologies will make them increasingly accessible to the general public.

Hydrogen Is Being Used As An Energy Source By Industries
Hydrogen has already been used on a large scale in industries for some applications and also as an energy source. What many people still do not know is that depending on the production process, hydrogen has its categories, divided into three colors: gray, blue, and green. Still, the most used by industries is gray, produced from natural gas, releasing carbon dioxide, which contributes to global warming.
Blue hydrogen requires the consumption of fossil fuels, with carbon capture and storage aimed at reducing carbon footprint. It is gradually being replaced by green hydrogen, produced from clean energy such as solar, hydroelectric, wind, or a combination of all these, meaning zero environmental impact. Today, the production of green hydrogen requires more investment than blue hydrogen, but recent studies indicate that this cost is declining, and green hydrogen will become the most economical option by 2030*.
Brazil Plays A Key Role In The Global Initiative To Decarbonize The Planet
Brazil plays a key role in this global initiative to decarbonize the planet in the coming decades. This is because the country is abundant in clean resources for generating the energy needed for producing green hydrogen, such as wind and sunlight for wind and solar energy, respectively, in addition to hydropower – our energy matrix is 83.7% renewable.
Committed to decarbonization, Air Products is advancing an initiative for global green hydrogen production. This involves a partnership between Air Products, thyssenkrupp, ACWA Power, and NEOM to establish a green hydrogen-based ammonia plant powered by renewable energy in Saudi Arabia. Considered the largest green hydrogen project in the world, this partnership will provide 650 tons of carbon-free hydrogen per day, reducing CO2 emissions by three million tons per year.
The NEOM Project Will Have Air Products As The Exclusive Buyer Of Green Ammonia
Set to begin operations in 2025, the NEOM Project will have Air Products as the exclusive buyer of green ammonia, which will be used for producing green hydrogen in various international markets, primarily targeting the transportation sector.
“The partnership between Air Products, thyssenkrupp, ACWA Power, and NEOM is a source of pride. Leveraging the unique profile of sun and wind in NEOM to convert water into hydrogen, this project will yield a completely clean energy source on a large scale that will eliminate carbon emissions equivalent to more than 700,000 cars per year. We want to expand globally the idea of green hydrogen as a fuel produced from clean energy, which does not have negative consequences for the environment, and is available to all countries,” explains Marcus Marinho, General Manager of Air Products Brazil and Argentina.
Recently, Air Products also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Cummins Inc. for a project to accelerate the integration of hydrogen fuel cell trucks in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Cummins will provide hydrogen fuel cell electric engines integrated into heavy trucks from selected partners for Air Products, which is beginning the process of converting its global fleet of vehicles.
