With the consolidation of the Mercosur–European Union agreement, Brazil is formally attracting interest from Japan, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and Asian countries, according to CNN’s reporting from sources in the government, opening a new front for commercial negotiations at the ministerial and technical levels
The agreement between Mercosur and the European Union is already producing effects beyond the bilateral relationship and has sparked interest from other countries to negotiate with the South American bloc. The information comes from CNN Brazil, based on reporting by correspondent Priscila Yazbek with sources in the Brazilian government.
According to the report, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada – countries that are part of the G7 – have already approached Mercosur to discuss the opening of commercial negotiations. The same sources informed CNN that the United Arab Emirates and Asian countries have also expressed interest in advancing talks with the bloc.
The sources interviewed indicated that the agreement with the European Union accelerates a process of market diversification that was already underway.

The internal assessment is that the formalization of the pact enhances Mercosur’s attractiveness in international trade and creates new opportunities in a context of reorganization of global supply chains.
Talks Are Already Happening at Ministerial and Technical Levels
According to CNN Brazil’s reporting, discussions with interested countries are already taking place at both the ministerial level, among foreign ministers, and at the technical level, involving trade negotiators and diplomats. These dialogues reportedly began even before the consolidation of the agreement with the European Union, but are expected to intensify from now on.
Sources in the Brazilian government also highlighted that 2026 is expected to be a year of high diplomatic workload, precisely due to the multiplicity of negotiation fronts opened after the agreement with the European bloc.
Recent Agreements Function as a Seal of Credibility
The report also notes that Mercosur signed an agreement with EFTA in 2025 – a bloc that includes Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein – and a trade agreement with Singapore in 2023. According to the sources consulted, these agreements, combined with the understanding with the European Union, act as a seal of quality and trust for new negotiations.
The decision of the world’s largest trading bloc to formalize a partnership with Mercosur enhances the international credibility of the South American bloc, especially in a context of more protectionist policies adopted by the United States, which has led other countries to seek alternative markets.
Members of the European Commission reportedly postponed the early year’s recess to internally negotiate the agreement, given the risk of losing the political window.
According to sources in the Brazilian government, there was concern that internal resistances, especially in more protectionist countries like France, could jeopardize the consolidation if the agreement did not advance before the Mercosur summit held in Foz do Iguaçu in December.
All reported information comes from CNN Brazil, based on sources from the Brazilian government and experts consulted by the network.
