With Hybrid Engine and Domestic Production, BYD’s Pickup Promises to Shake Up the Market and Disturb the Competition
After conquering the Brazilian market with the Dolphin and Dolphin Mini models, BYD is ready to take the next step. The Chinese automaker confirmed that it will expand the Dolphin family with two new vehicles: a compact SUV and a light pickup, both with domestic production and a focus on high volume sales.
The strategy was revealed by Alexandre Baldy, senior vice president of BYD in Brazil, in an exclusive interview. According to him, the success of the current models paved the way for new body styles and versions that leverage the brand’s strength in the electric segment. “The Dolphin brand is very strong, recognized. We see potential for the expansion of body styles,” Baldy told Autoesporte.
Compact SUV to Compete with Pulse and Kardian
One of the most anticipated launches is the compact SUV derived from the Dolphin. Although the Yuan Pro already occupies a similar space in the portfolio, the new proposal will have more accessible dimensions and price, aiming directly at consumers who currently opt for combustion models like the Volkswagen T-Cross, Renault Kardian, and Fiat Pulse, the latter having a mild hybrid version.

With a 1.0 engine producing 75 hp and costing less than R$ 70,000, Fiat’s car returns to the podium as the cheapest in the country; a temporary promotion for the 2026 Like version reduces the price of the Fiat Mobi.

With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.

With a 293.5 cm³ engine and a range of up to 400 km with a 14.1-liter tank, the Honda CB 300F Twister 2026 has up to 24.7 hp, an initial price of R$ 25,150, and already exceeds R$ 29,000 in the Fipe Table.

With a 1.3 engine, nearly 700 km of range, and Turbo 200, the Fiat model surpasses Polo, Tera HB20, and Onix, becoming the best-selling car in March; see the numbers for the Fiat Strada and others.
The current Dolphin measures 4.12 meters in length and has a wheelbase of 2.70 meters. The Yuan Pro is longer (4.31 m) but has a slightly shorter wheelbase (2.62 m). The new SUV is expected to fall between these two parameters, with an initial price below that of the Yuan Pro, which currently starts at R$ 182,800.
In terms of engine options, there are strong indications that the model may inherit the plug-in hybrid mechanics anticipated for the Yuan Pro, according to a report published in December 2024. This solution would allow BYD to expand its customer base by offering a more accessible and efficient utility vehicle for daily urban use.

Compact Pickup Will Be the Response to Strada Leadership
In addition to the SUV, BYD is preparing an offensive in the compact pickup segment, which is comfortably dominated by the Fiat Strada. The truck does not yet have an official name but is already being developed based on the success of the Italian rival. According to information obtained by the press, units of the Strada have already been sent to China for internal studies.
BYD’s new pickup will use the DM-i hybrid system with a 1.5 Atkinson-cycle engine, already known in the Song Pro, Song Plus, and King models. The proposal is to maintain the automaker’s electrification strategy — all vehicles launched so far are 100% electric or plug-in hybrids.
As a result, the future truck will have a monocoque structure, like the BYD Shark, which is already on sale in the country. The focus will be to deliver a modern, economical pickup that meets both light work and urban use, a gap still underexplored by other brands focused on electrified vehicles.
Production Will Be at the Camaçari (BA) Factory
All new members of the Dolphin line will be produced in Brazil. Assembly will take place at BYD’s new factory in Camaçari, Bahia, where the automaker intends to build up to eight different models on national soil.
This production structure is essential for BYD to achieve its ambitious goals in the country. The company has publicly stated that it wants to be among the three largest automakers in Brazil by 2028, which would mean selling approximately 350,000 vehicles per year. To achieve this, it bets on a varied portfolio with broad popular appeal and competitive prices — something that is only possible with local manufacturing and mastery of logistics.
Expansion of the Dolphin Brand Is Key to the Strategy
It is not just about launching new models. BYD is outlining a coordinated offensive to consolidate the Dolphin brand as a synonym for popular electric cars in Brazil. The pairing between the Dolphin and the Dolphin Mini has already totaled nearly 25,000 units sold between January and July this year, according to data from Fenabrave.
With the arrival of the compact SUV and the pickup, the expectation is that the Dolphin line will gain even more traction and reach audiences that currently do not find electrified alternatives within their budget.
Meanwhile, the visual details and commercial names of the new vehicles remain under absolute secrecy. BYD avoids commenting on design or exact launch dates, but all indications suggest that the two models should be unveiled between late 2025 and the first half of 2026.
