In Just One Year, The BYD Shark PHEV Leads The Australian Automotive Market And Surpasses The Mitsubishi Outlander In Sales.
The BYD Shark PHEV achieved a historic milestone in the australian automotive market by becoming, in 2025, the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the country’s history.
The feat was recorded in just 12 months, when the pickup from the Chinese manufacturer surpassed the cumulative volume of the Mitsubishi Outlander over nearly 12 years.
The performance took place in Australia, according to official data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), and draws attention not only for the absolute number of vehicle sales, but also for the contrast with the model’s performance in Brazil.

Less than a Tera TSI, up to 710 km of range and charging in 9 minutes: the new BYD Song Ultra expands the Chinese brand’s bet on increasingly faster, more technological, and competitively priced electric SUVs.
-
With a 1.0 engine producing 75 hp and costing less than R$ 70,000, Fiat’s car returns to the podium as the cheapest in the country; a temporary promotion for the 2026 Like version reduces the price of the Fiat Mobi.
-
With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.
-
With a 293.5 cm³ engine and a range of up to 400 km with a 14.1-liter tank, the Honda CB 300F Twister 2026 has up to 24.7 hp, an initial price of R$ 25,150, and already exceeds R$ 29,000 in the Fipe Table.
In numbers, the BYD Shark registered 18,073 units in just 2025, while the Outlander PHEV totals 16,949 cars sold since 2014.
The result highlights a structural change in the behavior of Australian consumers and reinforces the maturation of the electrified market in that country.
BYD Shark PHEV Redefines The Australian Automotive Market
The arrival of the BYD Shark PHEV coincided with a time of greater acceptance of plug-in hybrid technology in Australia.
Unlike the initial phase of the Outlander, which helped introduce this type of engine, the BYD pickup found a consumer more familiar with electrification, energy efficiency, and reduced operating costs.
Moreover, the pickup segment has strong appeal in the country, which directly contributed to the rapid advancement of the Shark.
Thus, the model not only gained ground but also redefined the top of the historical ranking of plug-in hybrids.
Mitsubishi Outlander Loses Steam After Years Of Leadership
The Mitsubishi Outlander played a fundamental role in popularizing plug-in hybrids in Australia. However, its growth was gradual.
The SUV took nearly a decade to exceed the mark of a thousand units sold in a single year, something that only occurred in 2023.
In 2024, the model still showed solid performance, with 6,126 units sold.
However, in 2025, registrations fell to 4,110, reflecting the arrival of new competitors and a strategic pause before the launch of an updated version, scheduled for this month.
BYD Expands Dominance And Threatens Second Place In The Ranking
The advance of BYD in the australian automotive market is not limited to the Shark.
The BYD Sealion 6, known as Song Plus in other markets, has already accumulated 15,253 units sold, even though it was only launched in 2024.
In 2025, the model recorded 9,055 registrations, more than double that of the Outlander in the same period.
With this, BYD is quickly approaching the second historical position among plug-in hybrids, currently held by Mitsubishi.
According to Drive, one of the decisive factors for this performance is the price.
The Sealion 6 costs about AUD 20,000 less (approximately R$ 13.7 thousand) than the Outlander PHEV, making it a more affordable option for consumers.
Price And Competition Accelerate Sales Of Electrified Vehicles
The competitive cost has been a key element for the growth of BYD’s vehicle sales hybrids.
At this pace, the Sealion 6 would only need to sell about 200 more units per month to definitively surpass the Outlander by the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, other models, such as the GWM Haval H6, appear in the ranking’s sequence, reinforcing the increasing competition in the electrified segment.
Brazil Lives A Reality Opposite To That Of Australia
Despite the success abroad, the BYD Shark PHEV faces difficulties in Brazil.
Launched in October 2024, the pickup has yet to gain significant traction in national registrations.
This contrast highlights how factors such as consumer profile, infrastructure, tax burden, and automotive culture directly influence commercial performance.
In Brazil, the hybrid pickup segment is still incipient, while high costs and low incentives hinder the expansion of the plug-in hybrid.
Market Shows That Context Matters More Than The Product
The case of the BYD Shark makes it clear that a model’s success goes beyond technology or the package offered.
In the australian automotive market, the combination of consumer maturity, competitive prices, and diverse offerings created the ideal environment for the advancement of electrified vehicles.
In Brazil, on the other hand, the challenge remains.
Still, international performance indicates that, with strategy adjustments and market evolution, the scenario may change in the coming years.
