Investigation
The commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, Colonel Paul Townsend, emphasized the importance of safety in the military sector. “Our personnel is our most important resource and we are committed to ensuring their safety”, he stated. He also assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to prevent future incidents.
Eielson Air Force Base houses 54 F-35 aircraft, considered one of the most advanced in the world. The expansion of the base cost approximately US$ 500 million in 2016.
Measures and Impact
The US Air Force has requested that drivers in the area avoid stopping near the crash site. Additionally, photography of the area is prohibited. These restrictions aim to ensure the safety and integrity of the investigations.
Similar incidents have occurred before. In September 2023, an F-35 fighter crashed in South Carolina after the pilot successfully ejected. The aircraft flew out of control before crashing in a remote area.
Cost of the F-35 Fighter
The F-35A, the conventional takeoff and landing version of Lockheed Martin’s advanced fifth-generation stealth jet, is one of the most sophisticated aircraft in the world.
However, its cost has been a topic of debate among governments and defense experts. Initially estimated at over US$ 100 million per unit, the price was reduced to approximately US$ 80 million due to efficiency gains in production and contractual negotiations.
Total Cost of Acquisition and Maintenance
The amount paid for each F-35A is just a part of the investment. Buying countries need to consider additional expenses related to infrastructure, training, and logistical support.
The global maintenance program from Lockheed Martin imposes operational integration that may limit the autonomy of the operating countries.
It is estimated that the total cost of the F-35 program, including development, acquisition, and maintenance over its lifespan, will exceed US$ 2 trillion.
