Simple, Nutritious, and Natural: Traditional Food Combination from the Peninsula of Nicoya Attracts Global Attention for Being Linked to Life Expectancy Above 90 Years

In 2023, a discovery about longevity gained international attention. In the series Living to 100, the expert Dan Buettner revealed what the healthiest breakfast in the world is. According to him, the answer lies in the Peninsula of Nicoya, in Costa Rica, where the population lives, on average, over 90 years, as pointed out by studies published between 2020 and 2023.

The revelation, therefore, is based on scientific evidence and field observations, conducted in regions known as Blue Zones — places where longevity and quality of life are notably superior to the global average.

Study Identifies Patterns That Favor Health and Life Expectancy

Researcher Dan Buettner, author of the Blue Zones project, investigated the eating habits of the population in Nicoya, in northwestern Costa Rica. Throughout the research, he observed that the diet is simple but highly nutritious and is part of a healthy routine.

According to National Geographic, which published the data in September 2023, residents of the region live up to 92 years, surpassing the global average of 72 years, according to the World Health Organization (2022). For him, this longevity is not coincidental, but a result of daily choices, especially in food.

The Composition of the Healthiest Breakfast in the World

During expeditions between 2020 and 2023, Buettner identified an extremely effective dietary pattern, present in the first meal of the day for the residents of Nicoya. The traditional menu includes:

  • Handmade tortillas made with corn, pre-cooked with lime or wood ashes;
  • Black beans cooked with herbs, rich in protein and iron;
  • White rice with bell pepper, onion, and fresh seasonings, providing sustained energy;
  • Local coffee, roasted and ground by the community, without the addition of chemicals.

This breakfast, being composed of natural and minimally processed ingredients, provides essential nutrients with a low glycemic index. As a result, it avoids glucose spikes and promotes prolonged satiety.

Moreover, the complete absence of ultra-processed products makes this meal healthier than many common industrialized options, as highlighted by the National Institute of Health of Costa Rica.

Nutritional Benefits Proven by Studies

According to the data presented in the documentary and confirmed in publications from the University of Costa Rica (2023), this breakfast offers:

  • Complex carbohydrates, which release energy slowly;
  • Natural antioxidants, which combat cellular aging;
  • B vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and potassium, which strengthen essential functions of the body;
  • Plant-based proteins, which aid in recovery and muscle strengthening.

Therefore, this meal provides not only complete nutrition but also protection against metabolic, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases. Experts point out that, when associated with a balanced lifestyle, this diet reduces the risk of chronic diseases by up to 40%.

Although diet is a crucial factor, Buettner explains that other elements contribute to longevity. In Nicoya, for example, the routine includes:

These factors, combined with natural eating, create an ideal environment for a long and healthy life. Therefore, longevity is the result of a conscious and balanced lifestyle.

Other Regions Share the Same Secret

Besides Nicoya, four other regions have been recognized as Blue Zones for housing healthy centenarian populations. All share similar patterns of eating and living:

  • Sardinia (Italy): a dietary base rich in grains, olive oil, and vegetables;
  • Ikaria (Greece): frequent consumption of local herbs and vegetables;
  • Okinawa (Japan): dishes with tofu, sweet potatoes, and various vegetables;
  • Loma Linda (USA): an Adventist community with a strict vegetarian diet.

In all these regions, the absence of processed foods and the emphasis on local foods are common traits. In addition, community living and a slowed-down pace of life help explain the high longevity rates.

Practical Lessons to Apply in Daily Life

Based on the studies conducted between 2020 and 2023, Buettner concluded that adopting a breakfast inspired by Nicoya is entirely feasible in any country. To do this, simply:

  • Choose natural and local ingredients;
  • Avoid ultra-processed foods with artificial additives;
  • Value simple, homemade recipes;
  • Maintain an active lifestyle connected with the community.

Therefore, it is not necessary to follow an exotic diet to live longer. The secret, in fact, lies in reviving traditional, sustainable, and healthy eating practices.
