Seagems Promoted A Course For 35 Students From The Public School System Of Rio Das Ostras, Focused On Submarine Engineering And The Offshore Market, With 57% Of The Positions For Girls.

Seagems conducted a course aimed at 35 students from the public school system of Rio das Ostras, with an emphasis on submarine engineering and the offshore market. Notably, 57% of the participants were girls, highlighting the importance of the project in promoting gender equity in the sector.

This educational initiative by Seagems provided 3rd-year high school students from municipal schools a rare opportunity for training. The technical training aims to prepare young talents for the competitive O&G market, thereby promoting the development of new skills. In the project, girls represented a significant majority, demonstrating a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Rio de Janeiro, July 2024 – This Thursday (25th), the Educational Project promoted by Seagems, a Brazilian company specialized in submarine engineering solutions, was concluded in collaboration with the Education Secretary of Rio das Ostras (RJ). The project focused on training students from municipal schools.

Educational Project Of Seagems

The initiative, which started on July 15, trained 35 high school students from CINAMOMO and Ciep 257 in a learning journey and corporate immersion in the O&G sector. The course included introductory modules and basics from various fields, as well as animations and institutional videos. In total, 103 hours of remote education (EAD) and 64 hours on-site at the SEA (Seagems Excellence Academy) facilities were offered. The training courses included Launch Operator (Module I) and ROV Pilot.

‘Seagems is a company that values training and focuses on education and improvement, with education as a market differential. That’s why it makes perfect sense for us to lead an initiative like this’, explained Glaucia Maciel, Human Resources Director of Seagems.

Transformation Through Education

For Glaucia, actions like this allow Seagems to fulfill its goals of leaving a positive legacy for society. ‘Having these young people with us is invigorating and confirms that we can make a difference in the lives of the community around us. We are providing a transformative experience for each of these young individuals who dedicated themselves to being with us during the school break. They are shining!’, celebrated the director.

The idea for the Educational Project began to be developed last year. The goal was to offer 3rd-year high school students from the Municipality of Rio das Ostras the chance to experience, in a corporate environment, basic classes on Seagems’ activities (such as line and ROV launching), in addition to an online learning platform with videos and courses distributed across areas such as Oil and Gas Market, Personal Care, and Social Skills. In eight days of training, students interacted with Seagems employees, gaining future insights and assistance in career choices.

Gender Equity And Inclusion

One of the highlights of the training was the significant participation of girls, in an area historically dominated by men. Enabling a future with greater gender equity, Seagems increased the number of women in its workforce by 10% in recent years, currently reaching 18% of the total.

Anna Sarah de Carvalho Costa, 17, a student in the 3rd year at CINAMOMO, was not familiar with the company before the course and was delighted with the training. ‘I learned many new things. I discovered, for example, that working offshore is not so easy after observing the operations. Although it was different from what I imagined, I really enjoyed handling the pieces and disassembling and reassembling the hydraulic pump in a team. I found Seagems’ office amazing, and I really value safety in this field’, she stated.

Ana Karolina Werdam Bonifacio, 18, a student in the 3rd year at Ciep 257, had doubts about which profession to pursue, but the course expanded her horizons. ‘It was the first time I had contact with Seagems. It’s interesting to think that such a relevant company is so close, and few know about it. I had heard about the offshore market, but had many questions. I really enjoyed the course. We had classes on hydraulics, mechanics, and ROV techniques. This opened up my range of professional options. I believe everyone will fondly remember this experience’, reflected Ana.

Replicating Knowledge

It is not common for Seagems technicians to have the opportunity to teach young people who are still exploring their career options. To support this journey, Seagems’ program, conducted over two weeks during the school break, covered the fundamentals of Launch Operator training, ROV Pilot, and basic concepts in electronics, mechanics, and hydraulics.

‘Seagems has shown great commitment by bringing these young people into our work environment, providing a valuable practical experience that can influence their futures. It is an honor to share my passion and experience with this diverse group. I look forward to seeing how they will apply the knowledge in practice’, stated Matheus Miranda, ROV Pilot instructor.

Mário César Guimarães, Launch Operator instructor, said that his journey at Seagems began 10 years ago. In 2014, when the company was being established, he started training the professionals who are now Seagems employees, in a market that back then lacked qualified labor. It is emblematic that ten years later he is the first teacher of the first course open to the community, focused on social responsibility.

‘Seeing this new generation takes me back to the past. I didn’t expect so much interest, but participation was excellent! Being part of these classes brings a lot of gratification; we also learn. And what I learn, I share. Knowledge should be disseminated. I take great pleasure in doing this’, declared Guimarães, who has been in the field since 1978 and is now retired.

This was the first edition of the Seagems Educational Program, which takes advantage of the school break of public school students in Rio das Ostras to offer courses. The company is already planning future editions, with at least one set to occur annually.
