Geely Electric Car Caught Fire in the Middle of a Busy Street in China, Causing Major Traffic Jam. The Automaker Has Not Yet Commented on the Incident.

An intriguing incident occurred on the busy streets of Chengdu, China, when a Geely electric car spontaneously caught fire, raising significant concerns among consumers regarding the safety of electric models amidst the growing popularity of this market.

Geely Electric Car Incident May Have Been Caused by the Battery

The vehicle, which was being used as a taxi, caught fire in heavy traffic, creating an impressive scene with flames reaching over 2 meters in height, accompanied by small explosions.

The dense black smoke further obscured the chaos. Chinese authorities acted quickly, sending firefighting teams to control the blaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries from the Geely vehicle incident; however, traffic was severely impacted, creating a chaotic situation in the heart of the Chinese city.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown and unconfirmed, initial speculation points to the possibility involving the electric car batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, which are very common in electric cars, are popular for being sensitive to physical damage and extreme temperatures, which can pose fire risks.

The concern is shared by automotive safety experts, who highlight that while there have been advancements in current electric car technology, fires in this type of model are still a concerning and relevant issue.

Geely Has Not Yet Commented on the Fire in China

Geely, the automaker of the burned electric car, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. In the meantime, the public is eagerly awaiting additional clarifications regarding the cause of the incident and any safety measures that may be taken to prevent similar situations in the near future.

The occurrence in the Chinese city underscores the ongoing importance of addressing safety risks associated with electric cars, even as technology advances and gains global acceptance.

The automotive industry faces a significant challenge in balancing innovation with safety, ensuring that the benefits of electric vehicles are not overshadowed by alarming incidents like this one. It is important to note that electric car fires tend to be more intense than those involving combustion vehicles.

This happens because the batteries can cause small explosions and release harmful and toxic gases into the environment. Authorities in China and other countries recommend staying away from the vehicle whenever something like this occurs and immediately calling the fire department.

Similar Accident Also Occurred in California

In February of this year, on a California highway, a Tesla Model S spontaneously caught fire, and according to firefighters, the electric car was traveling at the allowed speed on the highway until the driver noticed a source of black smoke rising from the cabin.

Fortunately, the driver managed to pull over and exit without injury. The fire, however, spread continuously, consuming the entire front of the electric car.

Local authorities had to use special jacks to lift the Tesla and expose the fire’s source, which, according to reports, started in the batteries. The responding team states that it was complicated, as the Tesla Model S weighs over 2 tons.

The special jacks were used to access the underside of the vehicle and cool the batteries. After 60 minutes of battling to prevent the flames from spreading further, nearly 23,000 liters of water were needed to extinguish the fire.
