Vietnamese Government Starts 391 Km Railway Between Chinese Border, Capital and Port to Expand Trade, Integrate Regions and Accelerate National Infrastructure

Vietnam has begun to implement a project that could change its logistics and enhance its economic weight in Asia. The new railway link between Lao Cai, Hanoi and Haiphong has gained its first movements within a broader infrastructure plan.

In practice, the project connects the border with China, the political center of the country, and the main port of northern Vietnam. This design strengthens the transport of freight and passengers and improves the circulation between industrial production, export, and regional trade.

Corridor Connects Border, Capital and Main Port of the North

The new railway will be 391 kilometers and is designed to unite three central points of the Vietnamese economy. Lao Cai serves as a land gateway for trade with China, Hanoi concentrates political decisions and economic activity, and Haiphong is the main port exit of the north.

This means the country is constructing a more direct route between productive areas, decision-making centers, and access to the sea. The expected impact is a faster, more predictable logistics system with a greater capacity to support industrial growth.

US$ 7.72 Billion Project Enters Much Larger Plan

The railway does not come alone. It is part of a package of 234 projects of infrastructure with a combined value exceeding US$ 129 billion, showing that Vietnam is trying to reorganize its territory with work on multiple fronts.

This movement includes not only transport but also expansion of airports, hospitals, industrial parks, housing, and other strategic projects. The message is clear: the country aims to grow with a more modern and integrated physical base.

Line Designed for Freight and Passengers

The approved structure foresees a 1,435-millimeter gauge, an international standard, and use for freight and passengers. The planned speed reaches 160 km per hour, indicating that the proposal goes beyond the heavy transport of goods.

This extends the corridor’s reach and helps integrate regions with different functions within the Vietnamese economy. The expected result is a more efficient network for mobility, production, and flow to the coast.

Five Stations Pave the Way for Work by 2030

The progress of the project has moved beyond just political phases and has entered concrete implementation. The government announced the start of work related to five stations, while the construction of the tracks is expected to begin at the end of 2026.

According to Reuters, an international news agency with global economic coverage, the full completion of the railway is projected for 2030. This schedule indicates that Hanoi is trying to expedite the execution at a time of intense competition for industrial chains and logistical routes in Asia.

Chinese Loans Increase the Strategic Weight of the Plan

Another important aspect is financing. Vietnam has stated that it will rely on loans from the Chinese government to help fund part of the project, which adds a strategic component to the plan.

This is because the railway brings the Vietnamese productive structure even closer to its largest trading partner. At the same time, it strengthens the country’s position in a regional landscape where infrastructure, influence, and trade go hand in hand.

Package Includes Obstacles That May Slow the Pace

Despite the impressive scale, execution still depends on resolving practical obstacles. Among them are expropriations, resettlement of residents, permits in forest areas, loan negotiations, and contracting stages.

The government itself has also indicated its intention to raise US$ 5.5 billion in external loans by 2026 to accelerate major national projects. This shows that the ambition is high, but the final pace will depend on the ability to unlock financing and works in the field.

New Railway Joins the Plan to Transform Vietnamese Transport

The connection between Lao Cai, Hanoi and Haiphong helps to understand a larger goal of the country. Vietnam wants to modernize a railway network considered outdated to sustain growth, industry, and exports on a different scale.

This plan gains even more weight because the country is also advancing in large-scale transportation projects in other regions. The message is direct: infrastructure is no longer just support, but has become central to the national strategy.

By moving the first pieces of this new line, Vietnam is repositioning its most sensitive corridor in the north of the country. The project brings the border, capital, and port closer together in an axis with the potential to influence trade, industry, and regional presence.

If the timeline is met, the 391 km railway could become one of the most relevant projects in Southeast Asia this decade. More than shortening distances, it changes the strategic landscape and reshapes the Asian board.
