São Paulo Coastal City Combines High Number of Centenarians, Programs for Active Aging, and a World-Renowned Landmark on the Coast

Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, has once again drawn attention as a destination for those dreaming of aging with quality near the beach, without giving up urban services and leisure options. The city stands out when it comes to longevity in the Baixada Santista and brings together initiatives aimed at the 50+ and 60+ audience.

One of the most impressive data points is the number of people aged 100 or older living in the municipality. Surveys released based on Census 2022 information indicate that Santos has 107 centenarians, with a predominance of women.

In addition, the city carries a tourist symbol that is hard to ignore. Along the coast is the largest beachfront garden in the world, a green corridor that has become an international reference and reinforces the image of a more active outdoor routine.

In practice, the “elderly paradise” is not limited to a beautiful landscape. The city hall points out a network of activities, projects, and social gathering spaces that aim to transform longevity into something more than statistics, connecting health, movement, culture, and social integration.

Santos Stands Out Among the Centenarians of Baixada Santista

The most discussed data point is the number of residents who have surpassed the century mark. Local publications based on Census 2022 data indicate that Santos has 107 people aged 100 or older, including 91 women and 16 men, reinforcing the female presence among the oldest.

In the same survey, the Baixada Santista has a total of 230 centenarians, and Santos is well ahead of the other municipalities in the region in this regard. The common understanding is that the city concentrates factors that favor aging, such as service availability, mobility in flat areas, and outdoor living.

It is worth noting that the operation of the Demographic Census 2022 began collecting data on August 1, 2022 and concluded on February 28, 2023, which helps to contextualize the reference period and the update of the reported numbers. This detail is important because results can be refined, and comparisons require care.

The Largest Garden on the Coast of Santos Became a World Record and Landmark

The Orla Garden is the most iconic point of this story. The Guinness World Records states that the beach in Santos is lined by a garden extending 5.3 km, with a total area of 218,800 m², and highlights that the green strip is separated by six channels.

In Santos, the recognition is often associated with the edition of the Guinness that solidified the title and became a source of local pride. The municipal administration has described the garden as “the city’s postcard” and emphasized the dimensions of the space as an argument for the continuous care of the area.

The history of the project also helps to understand why it is more than just a beautiful garden. Reports on the topic recall that the idea was conceived by sanitary engineer Saturnino de Brito in 1914, and that its effective development took shape from the 1930s, with sections completed a few years later.

Over time, the garden has incorporated urban and tourist elements. There are records that, between the 1940s and 1950s, the coast received improvements such as fountains and support structures, reinforcing its function for leisure and visitation.

Today, the space combines landscaping and an “open-air gallery”. Official tourist information points to around 38 monuments and sculptural sets, as well as approximately 1,300 flowerbeds with more than 70 ornamental species and about 1,800 trees, creating a setting that encourages walks, meetings, and outdoor activities.

Programs and Activities for the 50+ Audience Strengthen the Idea of Active Aging

The argument that Santos attracts and welcomes older individuals also involves regular policies and activities. In a municipal publication from 2025, the city hall describes a schedule of practices aimed at the 60+ audience in sports facilities and public spaces, with options ranging from tai chi chuan and stretching to adapted volleyball.

Among the cited examples are activities in traditional and high-traffic locations, including stretches of the coast and sports facilities in different neighborhoods. The same official communication highlights that some spaces work with specific groups by age range, indicating an attempt to adapt intensity, support, and routine to the profile of the participants.

The city also promotes initiatives that connect culture and coexistence. Programs like Senior Creative Village 50+ offer classes and practices focused on well-being, emphasizing socialization and maintenance of autonomy.

Another type of action that draws attention is the effort to integrate generations. One example is the Grandpa Knows It All Program, described by the city hall as an initiative started in 1998, focusing on contact between generations and valuing the knowledge of older individuals in public facilities.

This set of factors helps explain why Santos is often presented as a city prepared for the elderly. Still, specialists often remind us that “aging well” depends on more than attractions and projects: real access to health care, safety, cost of living, and daily mobility weigh just as much as the coastal scenery.

Would you live in Santos to enjoy retirement? Some argue that the city is a rare package of beach and structure, while others say that cost, traffic, and urban routine can diminish some of the charm. Leave a comment telling us which side you’re on and why.
