The Melting of Greenland Ice Could Cause a Global Climate Catastrophe. US Scientists Are on High Alert About the Imminent Danger of Flooding in Coastal Cities.

The threat is real. A new study conducted by US scientists reveals that Greenland has undergone complete melting periods in the past, putting coastal cities around the world at risk. The research brings to light alarming evidence that current global warming could trigger a similar process, raising sea levels by as much as seven meters.

In the study published by the University of Vermont, fossils of plants, insects, and even a poppy seed were discovered in sediments taken from the center of Greenland. These fossils indicate that the island, now covered by a thick layer of ice, was once green and teeming with life. The discovery is a strong indication that Greenland’s ice sheet is more vulnerable than previously thought, leaving scientists worried about the future.

Cities Like New York (United States), Miami, and Mumbai Could Be Submerged

For this reason, concern is growing. If the Greenland ice melts completely again, as it has in the past, the impact will be catastrophic. Paul Bierman, a co-author of the study, states that cities like New York (United States), Miami, and Mumbai could be submerged. He warns, “Don’t buy a house on the beach.” A sea-level rise of six or seven meters would submerge coastal areas, drastically altering the global map.

To reach these conclusions, researchers from the university in the United States examined sediments from the bottom of a 3.2 km deep ice core, extracted in 1993. These sediments were stored for 30 years in Colorado until the team decided to reexamine them. To the scientists’ surprise, the found soil contained willow wood and perfectly preserved insect parts, confirming the complete melting of Greenland in a distant past.

However, the researchers emphasize that the complete melting of Greenland is not something exclusive to the present. According to Bierman, this likely occurred within the last million years and may have lasted thousands of years. Long enough for soil and entire ecosystems to form, which makes the study even more concerning.

Scientists Warn: The Current Situation Is Critical.

Therefore, scientists in the United States warn: the current situation is critical. Richard Alley, a renowned climate scientist, reviewed the study and emphasizes that even when the causes of warming were less extreme, sea-level rise was significant. This study serves as a clear warning about the dangers of global warming, especially for those living near the sea.

Finally, the research in the United States concludes with an urgent plea. It is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to avoid a global climate catastrophe. The future of coastal cities depends on the actions we take now to protect Greenland and the planet as a whole.

Achei o título do post tendencioso.
