New Detran Law Could Put Your Driver’s License At Risk Of Cancellation! Know Everything About The New Rules For Older Drivers And How They Can Impact Your Licensing.

New Detran Rules: If you are a driver or are thinking of getting your National Driver’s License (CNH), pay attention: important changes are on the way. Starting this year, new updates to the Detran Law 14.071/2020 that bring new rules for renewal and deadlines of the CNH have come into effect. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in suspension or even cancellation of the document. Check out the changes implemented by Detran and see how these new requirements can impact your life behind the wheel. Get ready to understand what changes and how to avoid complications that could put your license at risk.

However, starting in 2024, new rules for renewing the National Driver’s License (CNH) that especially affect older drivers have come into effect. These changes aim to ensure safety on the roads and adjust renewal deadlines according to the age group of drivers.

Understand The Detran Law That Puts Your Driver’s License At Risk Of Cancellation

The New Detran Law was designed to ensure that drivers of all ages are in good condition to drive, protecting both individual safety and that of everyone on the roads. The new Detran rules include adjusted renewal deadlines by age group. Drivers under 50 will be able to renew their CNH every 10 years, making the process easier for younger individuals.

However, for those aged 50 to 70 years, the validity of the CNH will be only 5 years, due to possible health changes. And for those over 70, renewal must be done every 3 years to ensure that older drivers are in full physical and mental condition to drive.

Renewal Deadlines For CNH By Age Group:

  • Drivers Under 50: Valid for 10 years.
  • Drivers Aged 50 to 69: Valid for 5 years.
  • Drivers Aged 70 or Older: Valid for 3 years.

NOTE: These deadlines may be adjusted by the examining physician, considering the health and physical condition of the driver.

Financial Benefits For Seniors:

To ease the frequent renewal costs, discounts on the fees have been implemented:

  • Drivers Aged 50 to 70: 50% discount on the renewal fee.
  • Drivers Over 70: Up to 70% discount on the renewal fee.

These changes in the new Detran law, in addition to strengthening road safety, aim to simplify the control over the validity of the CNH for each age group.

And while these rules may seem strict, the intention is to make the roads safer and reduce accidents caused by health limitations that accumulate over time. It is necessary to stay alert to the new deadlines and understand how each one can put their CNH at risk of cancellation.

How To Renew Your License With The New Detran Rules?

Now that you know the deadlines for the new Detran rules, it is important to talk about how to renew your CNH in 2025. With the Detran law, each state is investing in a digital platform to expedite the process.

Drivers will be able to renew online through the official Detran website for their region, which brings more speed and fewer queues. Just be careful and make sure you are accessing the official Detran site, as digital fraud can be a risk.

The first step is simple; the driver needs to identify themselves with their CPF and password in the Detran system. If they do not have an account, they must create one by filling out their personal information. This registration is essential, as all renewal steps are processed online.

After identification, the next step is to schedule the mandatory medical examinations for all drivers.

Update On The Detran Law For Medical And Toxicological Exams

A key part of the renewal process to avoid a CNH at risk of cancellation is the medical examinations. These assess the physical and mental fitness of the driver, ensuring they are in ideal condition to drive.

This assessment is even more detailed for drivers of the professional categories C, D, and E, who often also need to undergo a toxicological exam. According to the new Detran regulations, this test is designed to identify substances that may impair driving ability.

The toxicological exam is mandatory in many states to ensure that professional drivers are free from any substance that affects their reflexes and skills. The CNH renewal process not only protects the driver but also contributes to a safer transit for all road users.
