There are currently 51 producing plants in Brazil, 14 of which are in Mato Grosso. In this large state in the Brazilian Midwest, 290 liters of biodiesel are produced per day.

There are 14 plants installed in Mato Grosso, making it the second largest producer of biodiesel in the country. More than R$ 5 billion liters of biodiesel were sold in the state last year alone. GALP will buy 50% of Petrobras in Belem Bioenergia Brasil and will become the company's sole shareholder, according to Cade's opinion.

Like other biofuels, the biodiesel uses renewable energy sources, which can replace, partially or totally, fuels derived from petroleum and natural gas in combustion engines or in other types of energy generation.

The two main liquid biofuels used in Brazil are ethanol obtained from sugar cane and soy.

“With the promotion of biodiesel, the agroindustry is stimulated and, consequently, the production of soy”. Said the economist of the Matogrossense Institute of Agricultural Economics (Imea), Daniel Latorraca,

The expectation of the sector is that, starting this month, the mixture of biodiesel in diesel will increase from 10% to 11%. This percentage should reach 15% by 2023.

There are currently 51 production plants in Brazil, one of which is located in Sorriso, 420 km from the capital, in Mato Grosso. In this large state in the Brazilian Midwest, 290 liters of biodiesel are produced per day.

The National Petroleum Agency (ANP) is responsible for the sale of biodiesel in the country through public auctions. Estênio Carvalho, manager of the plant in Sorriso, said that in the last auction, of the total production in Mato Grosso, 61% went to the north of the country, 21% to the northeast and 18% to the center-west.

“We need more investments both in expanding our own facilities, and for the entry of new players to serve the market in the future”, said Rodrigo Guerra, vice president of the National Association of Biodiesel Producers (Aprobio)

Around 45% of the energy and 18% of the fuels consumed in Brazil are already renewable. In the rest of the world, 86% of energy comes from non-renewable energy sources. A world pioneer in the use of biofuels, Brazil has reached a position desired by many countries that seek to develop renewable energy sources as strategic alternatives to oil.

Petrobras will not have its activities terminated in Bahia and the Northeast, as has been announced
