Gifted 6-Year-Old Living in Brasília Is Among 35 Semifinalists of the Socios Mirins Award from the ITA, Surpassing Teenagers. The Gifted Youngster Is the Youngest in the National Dispute and Can Represent the Federal District in the Brazilian Aerospace Pole If She Secures the Final Slot.

At 6 years old, prodigy Luna Abiorana Guedes already faces competitors up to 14 years old in one of the most competitive student selections in the country. The young prodigy from Brasília was chosen from 700 participants and secured a spot among the 35. She stood out in 2023 by being the youngest participant to compete and become a finalist for the Socios Mirins Award, linked to the ITA.

The classification places the prodigy as the youngest child in the competition. If selected among the 10 winners, she could represent the Federal District and visit the aerospace pole in São José dos Campos.

Her talent did not emerge in isolation. The prodigy has an example at home. Her older brother, Theo Abiorana Guedes, was also recognized in the same competition the previous year, being one of the 10 selected.

Theo also won a gold medal at the Brazilian Astronomy and Astronautics Olympiad, reinforcing the family environment focused on scientific knowledge.

The trajectory of the two siblings shows how early stimulation makes a difference in the development of high skills.

Skills That Appeared Very Early

According to her mother, Fernanda Abiorana, the prodigy already showed an ease with numbers in early childhood. At 3 years old, she performed addition and subtraction calculations.

By age 5, she was already calculating powers, such as squares and cubes of numbers.

In addition to logical reasoning, the prodigy also advanced in language.

At 4 years old, she could already read and write. Today she is developing a small book about renewable energy, showing interest in scientific and environmental topics.

Identified Asteroids and International Recognition

An interest in space led the prodigy to participate in the 24th edition of an asteroid hunting program, conducted in partnership between the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation and NASA.

During the activity, she identified two possible asteroids that are currently under preliminary analysis.

The official confirmation of these celestial bodies may take years, but the achievement already places the prodigy among young participants in international scientific projects.

The experience reinforces the girl’s affinity with astronomy and space observation.

Chess, Competitions, and New Medals

The prodigy also excels in chess. She started learning the game in 2022 and, the following year, secured second place in an interschool tournament.

The family reports that she enjoys competing and climbing to the podium.

At the Brazilian Astronomy and Astronautics Olympiad, the prodigy achieved 83 points out of 100 possible. Even without a medal in this edition, the performance contributed to strengthen her curriculum in the award selection linked to the ITA.

How the Socios Mirins Award from the ITA Works

The project is organized by the Association of Engineers of the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica and selects 10 children who excel in areas related to science, engineering, and inventiveness.

The winners have the opportunity to visit the Brazilian aerospace pole, touring institutions such as the Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica, Embraer, and the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais.

For the prodigy, the experience can represent an important step in building a scientific future.

She did not win the final edition, but was recognized for her high skills in mathematics and sciences, being a semifinalist among hundreds of older children.

Early Identification and Support for High Skills

The parents emphasize the importance of early identification of high skills.

According to them, when a child is not recognized, she may feel unmotivated or bored at school.

Specialized monitoring helped guide the development of both children.

In the public network of the Federal District, hundreds of students with high skills receive supplemental assistance in specific resource rooms, with activities aimed at both academic and artistic talents.

This support aims to ensure that the potential of each prodigy is stimulated appropriately.

Do you think gifted children should have special educational programs from early childhood?
