2-Year-Old Brazilian, Benjamin Lustosa, Joins Mensa International with IQ 132, Becoming the Youngest in the Country to Join the High IQ Society.
In October 2024, Brazil recorded an impressive achievement in the field of early intelligence. A boy only 2 years old, identified as Benjamin Lustosa, reached the milestone of becoming the youngest Brazilian accepted into Mensa International, the largest high IQ society in the world. With an IQ of 132, Benjamin not only surpassed the average of the global population (which hovers around 100) but also broke paradigms regarding child cognitive development. His feat surprised psychologists, educators, and experts in giftedness, placing the country in the spotlight in discussions about early intelligence.
What Is Mensa International
Mensa International is a society founded in 1946 in Oxford, United Kingdom, with the aim of bringing together people with high intelligence quotient, representing the top 2% most intelligent of the global population.
Currently, the organization has over 145,000 members spread across about 100 countries, all approved after rigorous standardized testing. To join, a score of 130 or above on official exams is required.
At just 2 years old, Benjamin is already among these few chosen ones, a milestone that reinforces the rarity of the case.
The Brazilian Prodigy
Hailing from Bahia, Benjamin began showing signs of above-average intelligence as a baby. According to family reports, he learned to identify numbers, letters, shapes, and colors much earlier than expected for his age.
By the age of two, he was already forming complex sentences, recognizing simple mathematical patterns, and demonstrating a great visual memory. It was from these observations that his parents decided to submit him to a professional evaluation, which confirmed his IQ of 132.
With confirmation, Benjamin was recommended to Mensa, where he began to join the select group of gifted children that already defy the logic of traditional education.
The Impact on Child Development
The case of Benjamin reignites the debate about how gifted children should be stimulated in Brazil. Experts highlight that, more than accelerating school content, it is necessary to offer environments that foster creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking.
According to the Brazilian Association for the Gifted (ABSD), the country has about 2.5 million gifted individuals, but less than 5% receive adequate support. This means that talents like Benjamin’s often go unnoticed or underutilized in the educational system.
In his case, the family is already seeking balanced stimulation alternatives, avoiding overload, but ensuring that the child has contact with challenges compatible with his cognitive ability.
Similar Cases Worldwide
Benjamin’s story also connects Brazil to a list of international prodigies who joined Mensa early:
- Kashe Quest (USA): joined at age 2, with IQ 146.
- Adam Kirby (United Kingdom): joined at age 2.5, after demonstrating early reading.
- Muhammad Haryz Nadzim (Malaysia): accepted at just 3 years old.
These cases demonstrate that, although rare, gifted individuals at such an early age exist and challenge the limits of cognitive science.
What Does It Mean to Have an IQ of 132 at Age 2
According to child psychologists, the IQ (Intelligence Quotient) does not measure all human potential, but is an indicator of skills such as logical reasoning, memory, and verbal comprehension.
A result of 132 points places Benjamin in a range considered “superior”, above more than 98% of the global population.
It is important to emphasize, however, that intelligence is multifaceted. Other factors such as creativity, emotional intelligence, social and artistic skills also play a fundamental role in child development.
Brazil and the Gifted
Brazil has internationally recognized talents in various fields, but support for gifted children is still limited.
Programs like NAPNE (Nucleus for Supporting People with Special Needs) and state initiatives in public schools seek to identify and support students with high abilities, but the reach is still small given the demand.
Cases like Benjamin’s can serve as catalysts to reinforce the need for public policies aimed at the gifted, in order to transform these talents into effective contributions to science, technology, and culture.
It is still early to predict what Benjamin Lustosa’s trajectory will be. But if there is one thing clear, it is that, at just 2 years old, he has already carved out a prominent space in the international scene.
The challenge now will be to balanced childhood, stimulation, and expectations, ensuring that the Brazilian prodigy grows up in a healthy environment, without losing the spark of curiosity that led him to stand out so early.
Meanwhile, his story already inspires educators, families, and other young people to believe that talent and dedication can arise in the most unexpected places and ages.
