Ceará Government Begins Works on the Export Processing Zone and Continues Expansion of the Pecém Port

The Ceará government has initiated the expansion works of the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) at the Pecém Port. With investments of around R$ 30 million, sector 2 (as it is designated) will occupy an area of 240 hectares. The delivery forecast for the first module is until February 2021.

According to the president of EPZ Ceará, Mário Lima Júnior, this mix of infrastructure and business conditions makes Ceará highly competitive in attracting new companies.

“The EPZ is part of the development framework of Ceará. We are a state that still has an industrial capacity lower than the Southeast, and this highlights an interesting destination for industrial investments. If we observe the universe of exporting industries in Brazil that need ideal export conditions, this condition is the EPZ of Pecém. Here, we gather port, road, communication, climate, and geographical conditions,” the executive informed.

The Governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana, stated that new companies should settle in the area this year, stimulating the creation of new jobs and economic growth in a post-pandemic scenario.

“This is an area of the State that we fought hard to include in the EPZ, and we are starting this recovery of the economy of Ceará. The expectation is that this area will be fully ready by February, but there are already companies that will start construction of their facilities this year,” Santana said.

Granite, Mining, and Maquiladora Industries Expected to Settle After Works in the Pecém Port Area

According to the president of EPZ Ceará, Mário Lima Júnior, the area can host granite processing industries, mining companies, and maquiladoras.

“In this first phase, we have granite processing industries, mining companies that produce special ores, such as manganese, and there are the maquiladora industries, which are assemblers that receive imported components, assemble, and export the final product. There are consultations, but nothing is formalized yet,” says Lima Júnior.

Pecém Port

Currently, three companies operate in the Complex: Pecém Steel Company (CSP), White Martins, and Phoenix Pecém. In 2019, the trio handled over 12 million tons of cargo.

The Pecém Port today is a joint venture formed by the Ceará Government (70%) and the Port of Rotterdam (30%). The area includes an industrial zone, the Pecém Port, and EPZ Ceará. According to Camilo, “the idea is to make the Pecém Port a more modern port, capable and agile in loading and unloading, because that is very important – the efficiency in the service it provides in operating ships that arrive from all over the world.”
