Technology Advances in the Transparency of Gold Operations
The Federal Revenue Service of Brazil (RFB), together with Serpro, launched on July 3, the Electronic Invoice Project for Gold (NFO-e), a novelty that promises significant changes in the fiscal administration of transactions involving the precious metal.
The Digital Transformation in Gold Supervision
The implementation of NFO-e indicates a significant transformation in the process of issuing and managing fiscal information related to gold, whether as a financial asset or a currency instrument. This innovation brings a series of advantages to taxpayers, society, and tax administrations.
The new system replaces the current model of issuing paper fiscal documents for gold transactions, reducing costs and simplifying obligations for taxpayers. For the tax authority, the technological advance means the ability to monitor operations between sellers and buyers in real-time, aiding in the fight against tax evasion and the illegal trade of the mineral in the country.

Alexandre Amorim, CEO of Serpro, reinforces the institution’s commitment to the country’s digital transformation. “The NFO-e is another step towards the digitalization supported by Serpro in the Public Digital Bookkeeping System (SPED), exemplifying our commitment to tax, economic, and public management processes, focusing on research, accelerated innovation, and inclusion,” he emphasizes.
Golden Rules in E-Commerce
The implementation of NFO-e, established by Normative Instruction (IN) RFB No. 2,138, requires that starting from July 3, 2023, all institutions of the National Financial System authorized by the Central Bank of Brazil to operate with gold, in its various modalities, adopt the new technology.
Ariadne Fonseca, superintendent of Serpro, states that the company is at the forefront of the bookkeeping processes in the country. “The goal is to streamline and standardize obligations for taxpayers, offering transparency and control to the tax authority. Serpro plays an important role in the evolution of SPED systems, already working on solutions such as the Electronic Invoice-NF-e and the Electronic Service Invoice – NFS-e,” Ariadne explains.
Rapid and Efficient Innovation
The electronic bookkeeping technology developed by Serpro for the RFB was implemented in record time for institutions of the National Financial System. Eduardo Rodrigues Maris, manager of Digital Tax and Labor Bookkeeping at Serpro, emphasizes the company’s commitment to meeting the tax authority’s needs with quality and efficiency, as well as adopting best practices in the development of innovative solutions. “This record-time delivery of just three months demonstrates our dedication to applying technology to solve public management challenges,” he concludes.
