The Anji Sincerity Is a Huge LNG-Powered Ro-Ro Ship Created With a Single Mission: To Keep Flooding the World With SAIC Cars

The dimensions of some ships continue to leave us in awe. When it comes to cruises, there is an undeniable battle for size and extravagance, with Royal Caribbean in an interesting race of self-improvement. They have the colossal Icon of the Seas, but they are already working on another even larger. However, in the oceans, there are many other huge ships, and besides container ships, we have Ro-Ro vessels: authentic marine fortresses with a very specific mission: to transport thousands of cars from factories to dealerships.

One of these Ro-Ros is the Anji Sincerity, a massive structure owned by SAIC that aims to flood the world with Chinese cars. Despite its size, the interesting thing is that it is more “eco-friendly,” and the secret lies in its engines that run on liquefied natural gas.

End-to-End Control

SAIC, or SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, is one of the most important companies in the automotive industry today. It is a Shanghai-based company that is surprisingly behind one of the best-selling cars in Spain last year: the MG ZS. MG is just one of SAIC’s brands, but the company is also one of Volkswagen’s main partners in the Asian country.

And, in addition to cars, they now have in their fleet a huge Ro-Ro ship called Anji Sincerity. These ships are called so as an abbreviation of ‘roll-on/roll-off’ and are basically used for transporting vehicles. Yes, like container ships, but instead of carrying cars inside a container, they are in this kind of floating parking lot. Zhao Aimin is the Deputy General Manager of SAIC International and comments that, due to global competition in this segment, having a fleet of ships of this kind offers them flexibility and better price control, as they had been renting third-party ships until now.

A Colossal Parking Lot

This enormous ship was built by China State Shipbuilding Corp., being the first ship of its kind entirely manufactured with domestic investment and features a system that collects information from every corner of the ship for simpler control. And all the conveniences in this regard are few when it comes to a ship measuring 199.9 meters in length, 38 meters in width, and a depth of 15.5 meters. It has an incredible 7,600 parking spaces and, on its maiden voyage to Europe, transported over 5,000 vehicles, including cars, buses, and machinery.

The Green Ro-Ro Ship

One feature that makes it very special is that it is currently the largest eco-friendly Ro-Ro vehicle carrier in the world. It is powered by LNG and is estimated to have emissions 30% lower than a ship of the same category but with traditional fuel. The tank has a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters and, to give an idea of what that means, it can cover a round trip from China to South America and from China to Europe.

The goal in building this Ro-Ro is to meet environmental protection criteria and emissions requirements in regions such as North America, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe, which may be a bit more stringent than those in other territories. In addition to LNG, the Chinese company is exploring other energy options, such as methanol.

Flooding of Chinese Cars

The Anji Sincerity is not the first from SAIC. One of the secrets to its success outside of China is precisely the ability to transport its cars, and currently, it has several ships covering routes from Southeast Asia, Mexico, western South America, and Europe. The goal is to have more transportation of this kind, and the plans are extremely ambitious: another 14 oceangoing ships in the next three years, with capacities of 7,000, 7,600, 7,800, and 9,000 parking spaces.

SAIC achieved over five million vehicle sales in 2023. Abroad, they achieved a record sales volume of 1.208 million, which is 18.3% more than the previous year. And it is clear that among the company’s plans is not to take a step back.
