Studies by GIZ, Senai, and UFRGS Indicate That the Agribusiness Sector Should Generate Thousands of New Job Openings. The Studies Also Indicate the Main High-Demand Careers in the Market.

With the accelerated expansion of the population and increasingly scarce natural resources, the agribusiness sector is rushing to find sustainable ways to boost its results and meet the global demand for food. The solutions found for this often align with one of humanity’s greatest allies: technology. From smart irrigation systems to machines that can be operated remotely, digital solutions are increasingly present in agribusiness, leading to the creation of more job openings.

Technology Can Bring More Sustainability to Agribusiness

In addition to enabling greener agriculture, new technologies also represent new job opportunities for those interested in entering the sector but who do not want to leave urban areas to live in rural zones.

According to a study published early last year by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in partnership with Senai and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the digitalization of agribusiness through precision agriculture makes it possible to increase soil yield and, therefore, greater harvests. It also allows family farming to professionalize, developing new channels for access to consumer markets and helping with access to accurate information for business management.

The expectation is that this will generate thousands of new job openings for professionals connected with digital technologies. The research indicated that technology-related careers in agribusiness should create 178.8 thousand job openings in Brazil by next year. However, it estimated that, at least in the short term, less than a third of professionals will be qualified to fill them.

Agribusiness Has Always Been Prominent in the National Economy

According to the study, in general, various professions are emerging in the sector as potential carriers of the knowledge necessary for the digitalization of the field. Digitalization is expanding job opportunities, but for more qualified professionals.

Those interested in these job openings should have knowledge of the existing software for processing all information from the property and decision-making, according to the document.

It is important to mention that agribusiness has always played a significant role in the national economy. Even during the most critical year of the pandemic, the sector recorded a 2% increase. Last year, agribusiness accounted for approximately 27% of the Brazilian GDP, generating one in three job openings in Brazil. This is not by chance; the ongoing digitalization movement in the sector is viewed with optimism by the market, which is eager to find qualified labor for the emerging opportunities.

Discover the Careers That Will Be Boosted by Technology

In light of this expansion, the study by GIZ, Senai, and UFRGS mapped eight areas related to agriculture that, driven by technology, should gain prominence in the coming years and also highlighted three with the highest market demand in the short term.

Among them is the digital agribusiness technician, also known as Agro Digital Manager. This professional is responsible for implementing digital projects in agricultural properties. Thus, their main activities include identifying and mapping problems in the field and coordinating teams to find solutions for the demands of agricultural producers and other agribusiness stakeholders.

The good news is that, although highly demanded, this professional does not need specific training in agronomy or other professions directly related to production in the field.
