The civil construction sector was one of the sectors that hired the most during the Covid-19 pandemic. The works, as they do not require highly skilled labor, ensured various job opportunities for economically vulnerable people. It was the sector that created the most opportunities, both with formal employment and informal or self-employed workers, in 2020.

Experts show that, after overcoming the challenges of resource scarcity and rising input prices, the civil construction sector should continue to heat up in 2021 and may generate an additional 200,000 jobs this year.
At the end of last year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) released the latest Continuous National Household Sample Survey – PNAD, which recorded occupational growth in four activities across 10 activity categories: civil construction, with the highest increase of 10.7%; trade and vehicle maintenance (4.4%); agriculture, livestock, forestry production, fishing, and aquaculture (3.8%); and industry (3%).

Ieda Vasconcelos, Economist at the Brazilian Chamber of Civil Construction, says that “The last two months of the year are seasonal, it is a rainier period, and usually, the job balance is negative. However, we had the best November in the historical series, started in 1992. More than 20,000 new jobs were created, which shows the strength of the civil construction reaction.”
