Completely Divided Public Perception
Since August 2025, COP 30 has become one of the most debated topics in Brazil.
The data released recorded 6,171 mentions in 90 days.
These numbers reveal significant polarization in the national debate.
The online reputation recorded as 5.1/10 demonstrates a delicate balance between praise and criticism.
Public sentiment was divided into 2,053 positive mentions, 2,189 neutral, and 1,929 negative.
X/Twitter Concentrates Nearly All Mentions and Amplifies the Division
As X/Twitter concentrated 98% of the posts, it became the main stage for discussions. Thus, among the 6 thousand mentions evaluated, both positive and negative volumes were tied at 1.9 thousand each.
Furthermore, neutral mentions led with 2.1 thousand, according to the September 2025 report. However, on Instagram, only 39% showed positive sentiment, while News Sites recorded 46% neutrality.
Still, the reach of the criticisms was impressive as each negative mention averaged 2,215 views, a number close to the positives, which marked 2,306 views.
Thus, the average engagement of the criticisms reached 98 interactions, very close to 107 positive interactions.
As a result, X/Twitter accumulated 9.3 million views, with 46.7 thousand retweets and 202.7 thousand favorites by the end of October 2025.
What Drives Positive and Negative Mentions
Positive mentions highlighted awareness, commitment, collaboration, sustainability, environmental initiatives, and climate action.
Therefore, users emphasized international relevance and the presence of global leaders.
However, between September and October 2025, criticisms arose involving overpricing, improvisation, crisis, security, waste, and hypocrisy.
Additionally, after President Lula’s statement on October 25, 2025, claiming that “the airport is expanded and ready”, high-reach profiles intensified criticisms.
Subsequently, the situation became tenser as a report from Reuters, published on October 28, 2025, mentioned a police operation in Rio days before the Summit.
Belém as a Global Stage and the Contrast with Local Reality
COP 30 represents a historic opportunity for the Amazon. However, the national debate highlights the contrast between international expectations and local challenges. Therefore, criticisms regarding infrastructure, security, and high costs persist among residents and specialists.
Furthermore, the term “hypocrisy” summarizes the perception of misalignment between environmental discourse and practical execution.
Thus, the high engagement of criticisms demonstrates public demand for transparency and responsible management.
Consequently, society demands accountability for the works carried out for the event.
