Chevrolet Alters Composition of Oil Saturated Belt of Onix 2026, Extends Warranty to 240,000 Km and Promises to Eliminate Clogging Issues, Even with the Use of Inappropriate Oil. Change Also Applies to Models Manufactured Since 2020.

Chevrolet has reformulated the oil-saturated belt of the Onix 2026 line and claims that the component now supports 240,000 km of use, aligning the warranty with the replacement interval indicated in the manual.

The engineering change targets a recurring problem: the risk of clogging in the lubrication system when using a lubricant outside the specification, a situation that, in the previous design, could lead to engine failure.

The information was originally published by the magazine Quatro Rodas, which tested the model and detailed the changes.

What Changed in the Onix 2026 Part

The component remains made of synthetic rubber, but has gained reinforcement with more fiberglass and maintains the teflon coating.

According to General Motors, the new architecture prevents fragments generated by the aging of the material from clumping enough to block oil passages, even if an inappropriate oil is applied.

The technical premise is to reduce the mass and size of the particles, preventing them from reaching ducts, the oil pump, or the oil sump pickup.

In addition to addressing the source of the problem, the redesigned belt tries to avoid cascading effects. In previous designs, dried rubber could detach and circulate with the lubricant.

When this occurred, there was a drop in flow at critical points in the engine. In practice, the oil light would light up; if the warning was ignored, there was a real risk of the assembly fusing within a few kilometers, requiring subsequent reconditioning.

Why Using the Wrong Oil Aggravates the Risk

The use of a lubricant that does not meet the manufacturer’s specifications remains a determining factor for the occurrence of the problem.

It is not enough to choose by viscosity.

It is necessary to observe the corresponding SAE standard and, above all, the manufacturer’s approvals. For the Chevrolet line, the requirement remains clear: the oil must have the Dexos 1 Gen 2 seal or higher.

This certification encompasses performance requirements that go beyond viscosity and include resistance to oxidation, compatibility with materials, and deposit control, among other points associated with the durability of the belt and the engine.

However, in workshop conditions, there are cases where opting for the cheaper product prevails and the choice is limited to the viscosity printed on the label.

This practice was common in older engines, when tolerances and materials allowed for greater variation. Today, with the integration of the belt into the oil circuit, the system has become more sensitive to deviations.

What GM Engineering Said

GM explains that the reinforcement with fabric along the entire length of the part changes the behavior in the event of degradation.

In the words of Keyvan Shabani, engineering manager at General Motors, “since there is now this fabric throughout the belt, if the lubricant is inadequate and it crumbles, the fabric particles will not be thick enough to cause any clogging, but the use of the wrong lubricant will always have consequences for the proper functioning of the engine.”

The statement preserves a central point: the new belt increases tolerance for error, but does not eliminate the side effects of maintenance outside the norm.

Consequences That Go Beyond the Engine

Residues from the old belt could also reach the brake vacuum pump, a component cooled by the oil itself.

When this flow was compromised, the assembly overheats and can burn. Without the pump, the system loses the assistance of the brake booster, making the pedal heavier and increasing braking distance.

The material update also aims to mitigate this type of outcome.

Extended Warranty Aligned with the Maintenance Plan

Since November 2024, the oil-saturated timing belt has had a 240,000 km warranty, the same level indicated for its replacement.

The policy applies retroactively to Onix, Onix Plus, Tracker, and Montana produced from 2020, equipped with the 1.0 aspirated and turbo and 1.2 turbo engines.

The coverage is independent of the vehicle’s age and is transferable in case of sale, accompanying the car’s history.

Until then, the belt followed the engine warranty: three years. For individuals, this period had no mileage limit; for legal entities or commercial use, the limit was 100,000 km.

By raising the threshold to 240,000 km and applying it to the circulating stock, the manufacturer seeks to reinforce confidence in the system and standardize the policy with the replacement interval already provided in the manual.

The Practical Impact for the Owner

In practice, the update changes less about how to maintain the car and more about the system’s tolerance for specification slips.

The recommended procedure remains the same: observe the Dexos 1 Gen 2 (or higher) approval and respect revision deadlines.

In case of the oil light turning on, the implicit guidance is not to continue driving, as the symptom indicates loss of lubrication in sensitive engine areas.

The new belt reduces the chance of an oil error causing clogs; however, it does not eliminate the other effects of an inappropriate product, such as increased wear and changes in the thermal behavior of the lubricant.

What Changes for Workshops and Consumers

For service networks, the change requires attention to the stock of lubricants and communication with the customer.

The correct specification is not just a technical detail: it is part of the mechanical assembly design. Conversely, the 240,000 km warranty creates a clear performance parameter.

Independent workshops and dealerships now work with a single reference, linked to both the service life of the belt and the factory coverage.

From the consumer’s perspective, the change reduces the fear that the oil-saturated belt is a “weak point” of the car.

In vehicles subject to high annual mileage, such as corporate use, the standardization of coverage helps to predict maintenance costs and define replacement windows based on technical criteria, not isolated perceptions.

Experiences in Prolonged Use

In tests of Long Duration reported by Quatro Rodas, two models equipped with oil-saturated belts were completely disassembled after extensive mileage and, according to the publication, did not show failures related to the component.

A Ford Ka 1.0, evaluated at 60,000 km, and a Chevrolet Onix Plus 2019, at 100,000 km, followed the maintenance schedule of their respective manufacturers, with services performed at dealerships at the correct frequency.

The results indicate that when specifications and deadlines are followed, the system delivers on its promises.
