Number of Brazilians Seeking Higher Education Abroad Is Increasing. Vitor Ferreira, 19, Received a 100% Scholarship in the USA and Highlights Cultural Shock. College in Brasília Offers Degrees Valid in Brazil and the USA, Based on Project-Based Learning. Hayek Global College Integrates Higher Education in Brazil with a Bachelor’s Degree in the USA.

There is growing interest among Brazilians in higher education specializations abroad. João Lima, 20, obtained a full scholarship in Canada and mentions the cultural differences he encountered. Institutions in São Paulo offer degrees with diplomas recognized both in Brazil and other countries, and the methodology is based on practical projects.

Hayek Global College has innovated by providing a higher education course in Brazil that also offers a bachelor’s degree in the United States. The academic director of the institution, Maria Silva, gives tips on how to prepare for an international academic career. More details can be found on the college’s official website: https://hayekcollege.com/. This type of degree allows students to be prepared for the job market in various parts of the world.

In 2022, out of 246.4 thousand students who left the country for international courses, 25.5% enrolled in higher education institutions. This represents a 50% increase compared to 2015, when 41,800 Brazilian students decided to seek higher education outside Brazil, according to data from the Brazilian Educational & Travel Association (Belta).

Growing Trend of International Degrees

The trend of seeking international degrees continues to grow, with thousands of students being motivated to pursue academic opportunities abroad. One of these students is Vitor Ferreira, 19, a young man from Brasília who moved to the United States in 2023 to pursue a degree in Business at Cumberland University, located in Lebanon, near Nashville. ‘*I have always wanted to study abroad because of tennis, a sport I am passionate about,’ revealed Vitor. To achieve this dream, he adequately prepared and secured a 100% scholarship with the help of the Sportex agency.

Despite highlighting cultural shock as a major challenge, Vitor sees many advantages in studying outside the country. ‘Meeting people from all over the world and maturing in another country is an incredible experience. I had to learn to solve things on my own, which was extremely beneficial for my development,’ he shares.

Planning for Higher Education Abroad

When it comes to planning for higher education abroad, according to Hannah Hämer, academic director of Hayek Global College, an international college based in Brasília, it is crucial to seek institutions that offer high-quality college courses and differentials in the student’s areas of interest. It is also essential to understand admission requirements, international visa procedures, and to verify if the infrastructure for living during the course meets needs, as well as to evaluate all financial costs, from tuition fees to housing, food, and flights to Brazil.

It is important for the student to be mentally prepared to face cultural shock and the distance from family. Hannah also points out that professional opportunities which may arise after the course, whether in Brazil or abroad, should be considered. Among the benefits of studying abroad, mentioned by Hannah, are professional growth, the development of responsibility, linguistic proficiency, and global networking. ‘Living out of your comfort zone helps students develop valuable adaptation and problem-solving skills, in addition to improving their ability to handle life’s challenges. This experience significantly contributes to personal and professional growth, making students much more prepared for the global job market,’ she concludes.

Choosing the Ideal University

As the expert emphasizes, the choice of university and country should be based on the student’s academic and professional goals, considering what each location can offer. ‘If the goal is to achieve higher earnings right at the start of their career, it makes sense to seek experiences in countries with higher per capita income, such as the USA, Canada, Australia, England, Switzerland, and others in Europe,‘ advises Hannah. However, she highlights the importance of immersive exposure to various cultures, which can significantly broaden new opportunities.

The future is increasingly digital and international, and those who can build relationships and do business with people from the USA to South Sudan will get ahead. This includes any country in the world, from China, India, and Korea, to Arabs, Latinos, and Sub-Saharan Africa, which is growing and has many talented people seeking new professional and business opportunities,’ she analyzes.

Language Requirements and Standardized Tests

Regardless of the chosen university, being aware of language requirements is essential. ‘Many foreign institutions require a minimum score on standardized tests such as TOEFL, SAT, IELTS, or Duolingo, to prove proficiency in English, which is necessary to attend classes and produce texts in the language,’ concludes Hannah.

Dual Degree Programs

Creating a bridge that connects Brazilian students to the best international universities is one of the goals of Hayek Global College, located in Brasília. The college offers dual degree programs through the American College program. In this program, students spend two years studying in Brazil before being transferred to a partner university in the USA to complete their bachelor’s degree in areas such as Computer Science, Business Administration, Economics, and Marketing. ‘In four years, Hayek students will obtain a diploma valid in Brazil and the USA, being a technologist in Brazil and a bachelor’s in the USA,’ explains Edson Agatti, executive director of Hayek Global College.

The institution offers 32 spots in this first selection process, with applications available through the link https://www.hayekcollege.com/american-college. To apply, it is necessary to have completed high school and possess fluent English. Classes are 100% in English, using project-based learning and active methodologies, with professors from various parts of the world. The effectiveness of this methodology earned Hayek 8th place in the Student Mobility and Openness category of the World University Ranking for Innovation (WURI) in 2024.
