UFC Transfers Patent and Tilapia Skin Dressing Will Arrive at Hospitals with Industrial Production Expected to Start by 2027.

The industrial production of the innovative biological dressing made with tilapia skin is set to transform burn treatment in Brazil.

This advancement is made possible because UFC (Federal University of Ceará) has transferred the patent of the technology for commercial use.

The technology, developed within the university since 2015, will now be managed by the pharmaceutical industry, in a move that solidifies the partnership between academia and the productive sector.

Patent Transferred and Tilapia Skin Dressing Will Reach Hospitals Nationwide

The decision to transfer the patent ensures the industrial and commercial use of the technology, something considered essential by UFC researchers.

The dressing made with tilapia skin is expected to finally reach hospitals and specialized centers, expanding access to treatments that have already shown significant results in controlled studies.

Biotec Wins Public Bid and Begins Plan to Industrialize the Dressing

The winning company of the licensing process was Biotec, a pharmaceutical company with 32 years of experience and direct support for research since 2018.

The technology also has applications in other types of injuries, such as vaginal reconstructions for patients undergoing radiotherapy.

With the signing of the agreement, UFC and the inventors of the method will receive R$ 850,000, in addition to 3.7% royalties on the factory’s net profit.

The initial projection from Biotec indicates the production of 1 million units of tilapia skin in the first year.

Factory Expected to Begin Operations by the End of 2027

Biotec estimates that the factory will start operations by the end of 2027, after completing construction and setting up the industrial plant.

With this new phase, experts believe that Brazil will establish itself as a global reference in the use of tilapia skin for clinical purposes.
