The Online English Course of the Cultural Institute Is Being Offered Because, According to MEC, About 85% of English Teachers in Public Schools Do Not Master the Language
According to MEC, about 85% of English teachers in public schools in Brazil do not master the language. This is mainly due to the inefficiency of courses and lack of opportunities to practice English. Therefore, the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute announces a new online English course, aimed at public school teachers, with 10% full scholarships.
The most learned language in the world as a second language is English, yet Brazil ranks 60th in the global proficiency ranking of the language and 3rd in Latin America, according to the academic coordinator of the Cultural Institute, Natália Matte.
According to the coordinator, the purpose of the online course is to enhance the teacher’s proficiency in the English language, regardless of their current level of knowledge. The Institute has enough expertise to provide this qualification, as it is a binational center with over eight decades of experience, therefore having all the credentials for it.

About the Institute
The Brazilian-American Cultural Institute was one of the first institutions to open space for the English language in the city of Porto Alegre. The Cultural’s vocation for work in the education field is strongly linked to the institute’s origin.
In the 1930s, the interest in closely knowing a new culture, which began to be publicized through literature and cinema, awakened in a group of intellectuals from Porto Alegre the desire to travel to the United States. Thus began the challenge of Erico Verissimo and his partners in creating an institution that, even from afar, would cultivate the language, customs, and culture of the United States. On July 14, 1938, with the collaboration of the United States Consul, the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute was inaugurated.
For over eighty years, the Institute has always been involved with cultural, educational, and social actions, hosting visual artists, singers, writers, and musicians, both Brazilians and Americans, brought by the U.S. embassy. Lectures, seminars, competitions, and art exhibitions also took place systematically. An artistic reference at a time when few cultural spaces existed in Porto Alegre, the Institute welcomed artists who are now highlights in various areas of artistic expression in Brazil.
