The Fertilizer Factory Based on Hydrogen from Atlas Agro Will Be Located in Minas Gerais, in the City of Uberaba, and Had Investments of Over US$ 800 Million
Atlas Agro, an agribusiness company, is investing in the construction of the first nitrogen fertilizer factory based on green hydrogen in Brazil. With a total investment of US$ 850 million (or about R$ 4.3 billion), the hydrogen-based fertilizer factory from Atlas will be built in Uberaba (MG) and will begin construction in 2024, with completion expected by mid-2027, according to the website Portos e Navios.
Pioneering Project in Decarbonization of the Fertilizer Industry in Brazil
Atlas Agro aims to be a pioneer in the decarbonization of the fertilizer industry in Brazil. With plans to build seven to nine green nitrogen fertilizer plants in the country, based on hydrogen, the organization aims to reduce dependence on imported fertilizers. Currently, over 85% of fertilizers used in Brazil are imported, amounting to more than US$ 8 billion in fertilizers.
The Atlas Agro factory will utilize a 100% clean matrix, drawing from renewable sources such as solar and wind energy, to produce green hydrogen, green ammonia, and nitrogen fertilizers with zero carbon emissions. Renewable energy consultancy Cela has been hired to assist the company in prospecting and selecting renewable energy suppliers for the Uberaba plant.

Production Capacity of 500 Thousand Tons of Fertilizers Per Year at the New Atlas Factory Based on Green Hydrogen
The Atlas Agro factory will have a production capacity of 500 thousand tons per year of fertilizers to serve customers in the region. Several clients have already expressed interest in purchasing zero carbon nitrogen fertilizers based on hydrogen, and Atlas expects to finalize supply agreements in the coming months.
Currently, 100% of the nitrogen fertilizer used in Brazil is imported from other countries, such as Russia, all produced from fossil and polluting sources. With the construction of the first nitrogen fertilizer factory based on green hydrogen in the country, Atlas Agro takes an important step towards replacing foreign fertilizers with a significant carbon footprint with a national production from clean and sustainable sources.
Moreover, the factory represents a significant opportunity for green reindustrialization and food security in Brazil. Fertilizers produced from fossil sources emit over one ton of CO2 equivalent for each ton of fertilizer, whereas fertilizers based on green hydrogen are free from carbon emissions during production.
