The automatic renewal benefits drivers registered in the National Positive Driver Register, but different rules apply for those over 50. The process continues to require physical and mental fitness evaluations, and drivers aged 70 and above are excluded from this category.
Drivers aged 50 to 69 can utilize the automatic renewal of their National Driver’s License (CNH) once, provided they are registered in the National Positive Driver Register (RNPC) and meet the conditions outlined for this advantage.
However, this convenience doesn’t eliminate all steps in the process. The Law No. 15.428, enacted on June 5, 2026 maintained automatic renewal for eligible drivers, but preserved the requirement for a physical and mental fitness evaluation before issuing a new license.

The current rule differs from the version that started in early 2026. Provisional Measure 1.327/2025 had created a broader renewal, exempting in-person exams for drivers meeting certain conditions.
During the legislative process, this point was altered. The subsequently sanctioned legislation preserved the automation of the procedure but mandated that drivers undergo the necessary physical and mental evaluations to remain licensed.
Automatic Renewal May Still Incur Costs
The reference to fee-free renewal is related to the administrative simplification of the procedure and does not mean that all steps are necessarily free. The legislation allows for charges for medical evaluations and, when required, psychological assessments.
These procedures have a public price defined according to the rules set for the traffic system. Therefore, drivers benefiting from automation may avoid certain administrative renewal fees but will not be exempt from costs related to mandatory examinations.
In practice, those meeting the conditions do not need to initiate the entire conventional renewal procedure at the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran). After completing the required evaluation and being deemed fit, the document update can proceed through the system, in accordance with the guidelines from the Ministry of Transport.
The new CNH may be made available in digital format. Drivers wishing to obtain a physical document must request it from the responsible Detran, and issuance may incur the corresponding state fee.
Registration in RNPC is One of the Conditions
Age alone does not guarantee access to automatic renewal. Drivers must participate in the RNPC, a registry intended for drivers who remain free of infractions subject to points during the period established by law.
Inclusion in the National Positive Driver Register requires the driver’s consent. Thus, going 12 months without an infraction generating points is not sufficient if the driver has not opted into the registry used to identify safe drivers.
For those aged 50 to 69, there is an additional specific restriction: automatic renewal can only be utilized once. Even if a driver remains registered in the RNPC and maintains the necessary record, this advantage cannot be repeated within that age bracket.
The limitation is in addition to the validity period applied to the license. Between ages 50 and 69, the CNH is generally valid for up to five years, unless the professional conducting the evaluation determines a shorter period.
After utilizing automatic renewal, drivers in this age range will not be able to access the same benefit at the next expiration. The new renewal will have to follow the procedures and requirements in effect when the document expires again.
Rule Changes at Age 70
Drivers aged 70 and older are excluded from the automatic renewal linked to the National Positive Driver Register, even if they have a good driving record and meet the other requirements for registration participants.
For this group, the National Driver’s License (CNH) is valid for a maximum of three years. The period may be shorter if the professional responsible for the evaluation identifies a condition that requires more frequent monitoring.
The possibility of reduced validity is not limited to drivers aged 70 and older. Drivers from other age groups may also receive a license with a shorter validity period if indicated by the assessment conducted during the process.
In these cases, age and history of violations are not the only factors considered at the time of renewal. The validity established based on the health assessment also affects the procedures to be followed when the document is due to expire.
The discrepancy between the information released at the beginning of 2026 and the rule later consolidated is due to changes made during the legislative process of the provisional measure. The initial version proposed exemption from the in-person examination in certain situations, while the law signed in June maintained the requirement for a physical and mental fitness evaluation prior to automatic renewal.
