The iconic glasses and plates from Duralex, known for withstanding impacts and having been present in kitchens, schools, and bars for decades, are becoming increasingly rare in Brazil. Founded in France in 1945, the brand gained worldwide fame thanks to the innovation of tempered glass, which made its products nearly “unbreakable.”

However, since 2020, the company has faced a series of challenges that resulted in a decline in production and difficulty finding items in the national market.

The shortage of products began to be noted by Brazilian consumers in recent years, raising questions about the brand’s fate.

The decrease in Duralex’s presence on shelves is linked to economic factors, logistics, and changes in consumer profiles.

Even with recovery efforts, the brand has yet to regain the distribution pace of its heyday, when it was a reference in durability and practicality.

The Origin of Fame: Technology and Duralex Tradition

The durability of Duralex products has an explanation: the company was a pioneer in the use of tempered glass.

During the manufacturing process, the glass is heated to about 700 °C and then cooled rapidly.

This technique creates internal tensions that make the material up to 2.5 times more resistant than regular glass.

Moreover, when a Duralex item breaks — which is not impossible — it shatters into small rounded pieces, without sharp edges.

This increases safety and reduces the risk of cuts, which has always been an important differentiator for schools, restaurants, and homes with children.

Nostalgia and Strong Presence in Daily Life

In the emotional memory of Brazilians, Duralex products are linked to everyday scenes: family meals, lunches in public schools, and coffee served in corner bars.

The Gigogne glasses, in particular, became a true popular symbol. With a simple design, stackable and durable, they were practical, long-lasting, and ubiquitous.

In France, the success was similar. Generations of children played with the numbers engraved on the bottom of the glasses, creating legends and games in school cafeterias.

This tradition helped solidify the brand’s image as a synonym for robustness and reliability.

The Decline: Crisis, Pandemic, and Rise in Energy Costs

The weakening of Duralex is directly related to the global crisis that affected various sectors.

In 2020, the company entered a judicial recovery process, pressured by financial difficulties, declining sales, and a significant rise in energy costs — a problem exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The halt in activities and economic instability directly impacted the production of the factory in France, affecting international distribution, including in Brazil.

With fewer products being manufactured, the brand gradually disappeared from Brazilian stores and supermarkets.

In 2021, Duralex was acquired by the French group International Cookware, responsible for other kitchenware brands.

The aim of the acquisition was to restructure operations, modernize the production process, and ensure the continuity of the brand.

Despite the gradual resumption of manufacturing, Duralex products have yet to return to the market with full strength.

Distribution remains restricted, especially in countries outside Europe, such as Brazil, where the brand’s presence was once much more significant.

Does Duralex Still Exist? Where to Find Today?

Yes, Duralex is still active and continues its production based in France. However, the supply in Brazil remains limited.

The products are mainly found in specialty kitchenware stores and online marketplaces, such as Amazon, Mercado Livre, and importers’ websites.

Some classic models — such as the Gigogne glass and transparent plates — are still available, although in smaller quantities.

Additionally, it is common to find Duralex items in thrift stores, antique shops, and bazaars, where products from past decades have gained collectible status.

Decline in Popularity: What Changed in the Market?

The reduction of Duralex’s presence in Brazil is also explained by changes in consumer behavior and market conditions:

Competition with plastic and porcelain products, which offer more accessible prices and greater aesthetic variety.

Changes in consumption habits, with a greater appreciation for contemporary design and personalized items.

Logistical challenges and increased import costs, which affected the regularity of supply.

Expansion of national and international tempered glass brands, which have gained shelf space.

These factors have made Duralex products less competitive in an increasingly dynamic and demanding market.

The Legacy of Duralex Remains Alive

Despite the difficulties, the Duralex brand continues to be synonymous with strength and durability.

Its legacy goes beyond functionality: it represents an emotional bond with the past and a symbol of a time when durability was the rule, not the exception.

For many consumers, using a Duralex glass is more than practicality — it’s reliving an emotional memory.

And it is precisely this nostalgia, combined with unparalleled quality, that keeps the brand alive in the collective imagination and desired by collectors and enthusiasts of classic kitchenware.
