EDP Renewables Decided to Expand Its Field of Action and This Time It Was to Europe, in Its New Wind-Solar Energy Production Project

EDP Renewables (EDPR) continues to innovate in the renewable energy sector, with the installation of its third hybrid wind-solar project, this time in Poland. The pioneering 45 MW photovoltaic park in Konary, in the northwest of the country, marked the start of its operations, introducing a unique approach to combine wind and solar energy at the same location, according to the EPbr website.

EDP’s new venture is a step forward in integrating clean energy sources. By combining an existing wind farm in Pawlowo, with a capacity of 79.5 MW, with the new photovoltaic park in Konary, EDP achieves a remarkable feat. These two complementary renewable sources will be able to share the same grid connection infrastructure, resulting in a more efficient use of resources.

Maximizing Renewable Energy Potential

The synergy between wind and solar energy is an important milestone for the energy transition. EDP has developed specific algorithms to monitor and manage the operation of these two energy sources. This allows them to work together, maximizing the potential of each, supplying electricity to the grid when conditions are most favorable.

The photovoltaic park in Konary not only represents a technological advancement but also brings significant environmental benefits. With nearly 70,000 solar panels spread over an area of more than 55 hectares, the electricity generated over 25 years is expected to be sufficient to eliminate around 350,000 tons of coal from the energy equation. This would also prevent the emission of approximately 840,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Boost for Consumers and Sustainability

Bartosz Fedurek, general director of EDPR in Poland, notes that the hybridization of projects, such as this combination of wind and solar energy, could provide relief to the country’s energy consumers, given the current energy price situation and the need for innovative options to expand renewable capacity.
In addition to this hybrid project, EDPR has been prominent in other areas of sustainable energy. In a global partnership, the company has joined forces with Faurecia, part of the Forvia group, to install up to 100MWp of solar energy in the company’s units in Europe, Asia, and the United States. The initiative aims to install over 60 self-consumption solar parks across various Faurecia factories, driving the transition to renewable energy and the concept of “Energy as a Service.” This partnership, which spans multiple continents, is a testament to EDPR’s ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability worldwide.
