Fremantle Highway Cargo Ship Fire While Transporting Thousands Of Cars Off The Coast Of The Netherlands
One month after the fire that affected the Fremantle Highway cargo ship, carrying thousands of cars off the coast of the Netherlands, new information about the condition of the electric cars on board is emerging. According to Olhar Digital, the latest information indicates that some of the electric cars remain in “good condition,” providing a glimmer of hope amidst the devastation.
According to Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis Salvage Company, approximately 500 of the 1,000 electric vehicles on board seem to be in satisfactory condition after the fire. The electric cars in question are part of the over 3,700 cars that were being transported by the cargo ship. Berdowski shared this information in a statement to the Dutch press, highlighting that the cars were located on the lower decks of the ship, which remained relatively intact.
Challenges In Removing Damaged Cars From The Ship
Although news that some of the electric cars survived the fire is encouraging, recovering these vehicles still faces significant challenges. The upper decks of the ship were severely damaged by the high temperatures, resulting in the melting of the cars present there. The logistics of removing the remaining cars is complex, with the risk of new fires being a central concern.

Peter Berdowski warns of the potential danger of recurring fires during the process of moving the cars. He emphasizes that these electric vehicles
have batteries charged with high voltage, further increasing the risks involved.
Prevention On Ships As A Priority
The tragedy of the Fremantle Highway fire highlights the importance of prevention and safety measures in the transportation of electric cars. The International Union of Marine Insurers (IUMI) noted that, to date, there is no evidence of fires aboard roll-on/roll-off ships caused by new electric vehicles.
The fire on the Fremantle Highway occurred in July, resulting not only in the loss of vehicles but also in the loss of lives. The loading of electric cars, with their high-voltage batteries, underscores the need for stringent protocols to ensure safety in such situations.
While some hope has arisen with the news that part of the electric vehicles survived the fire, the incident remains a grim reminder of the challenges the industry faces in the safe transportation of electric vehicles.
