Shorter showers, moderate use of heaters, correct refrigerator adjustment, natural lighting, and unplugged appliances help reduce waste and electricity consumption during the colder months of the year

With the arrival of winter, electric showers and heaters are used more frequently in homes, increasing consumption. Measures such as reducing shower time, taking advantage of natural light, and unplugging equipment prevent waste.

Energy savings start with the electric shower

According to Enel, the electric shower is among the appliances that consume the most energy in a home. The impact increases in the cold months when showers tend to last longer and the equipment remains in the “winter” position.

Reducing shower time is one of the most effective measures to decrease consumption. It is also recommended to turn off the shower while soaping up and avoid maximum power when the day’s temperature allows for another setting.

According to Aneel, reducing shower time by just a few minutes, when adopted by the family as part of the routine, can already represent a noticeable decrease in monthly electricity consumption.

Heaters should remain on only for the necessary time

Electric heaters can also significantly increase consumption when used for prolonged periods or improperly. The guideline is to turn them on only for the necessary time and use them in closed environments.

When the room is already heated, the equipment should be turned off. Before purchasing, consumers can also consult the National Energy Conservation Label, from Inmetro, which identifies the energy performance of appliances.

Equipment with better energy efficiency ratings tend to consume less electricity during their lifespan. Therefore, the choice of model can affect energy expenditure over time.

Refrigerator requires proper adjustment and sealing

Opening the refrigerator repeatedly or leaving the door open for too long increases waste. During winter, it is not necessary to excessively lower the internal temperature, as the ambient temperature is already naturally lower.

The sealing rubbers must remain in good condition. It is also recommended not to store hot food and to keep the appliance adjusted according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Natural light, LED, and unplugged devices reduce waste

Even with shorter days, opening curtains and windows allows you to take advantage of natural lighting and reduce the period of lamp usage. The organization of spaces can also favor the entry of light during the day.

Replacing fluorescent or incandescent bulbs with LED models helps reduce consumption. According to Inmetro, LED bulbs have greater energy efficiency and a longer lifespan than older technologies.

Televisions, computers, video games, and chargers continue to consume energy when in standby mode. Unplugging them when not in use helps avoid this expense, although their consumption is lower than that of an electric shower.
